Need Some Piano Pieces for The Great Gatsby
on: April 12, 2005, 06:33:08 AM
I have a school project on The Great Gatsby it's due on thursday, I decided to make a cd with piano pieces that fit the story, but I don't know any pieces that fit the story. If anybody here has read The Great Gatsby can you recommend me some piano pieces, and tell me how it fits with the story?

Two possibilities suggest themselves. You could learn some piano solos from the twenties, especially pieces by Billy Mayerl or similar, which were no doubt played a lot at functions associated with the upper class decadence of that period. (This is in no way a reflection on the music itself, which was excellent.)

If there isn't time to learn solos, then procure a fake book of old tunes and learn a few from the era in question, preferably in the playing style of the period, i.e. heavily syncopated swing.

Gershwin's Three Preludes were what immediately came to mind...

Well which part of his character?

Grandeur and wealth- Chopin's Heroic Polonaise (maybe???) or Etude Op. No. 1 played in that manner

Dishonesty- No idea
Love for Daisy- God, so many, um, Chopin's 4th Ballade or Barcarolle, or almost any nocturne, some Rachmaninoff maybe...
