Pletnev
on: April 22, 2005, 01:49:14 PM
Hi !!

I wonder why Pletnev is so rarely mentionned when it comes to list the greatest pianists of the century?  :o :o

I own 4 CDs of him, playing Tchaicovsky, Haydn, Scarlatti and C.P.E. Bach.
In my opinion, he is EXCELLENT.

What do you think of him? (as a pianist, not as a conductor).
He is one of my favourites.  :D

I love Pletnev and his Rach 3 is my favourite (even though most people think it sucks)

It gets kind of annoying when he over-rubatos the piece though.
Fortune favours the musical.

Pletne'v playing to me seems very emotionless, sorry to say.  And the funny thing is that he wrote some of the most powerfully emotional music I know, such as the Tchaikovsky/Pletnev Concert Suite from the Ballet "Nutcracker" and the Tchaikovsky/Pletnev "Adagio" from Swan Lake.  The Nutcracker is an incredible piece and i advise that anyone who can play it does, as it is becoming a pretty popular competition piece, not to mention beautiful.  It was my first major romantic piece, and actually still is unless you count a few Beethoven sonatas.  The Andante Maestoso (last movement) is soooo moving!

I find Pletnev's dynamics limited from mf to f+
A friend of mine saw him live and found it all loud - not at all sensitive playing

Well, i didnt see him live, but he shows a very sensitive touch in his recordings.

By the way, i dont like those pianists whose pp is SOOO low  that makes you think that either:

1-the piece has finished or
2-someone turned off your audio system

 :) :)

I agree that sometimes his rubatos are so over the top, especially towards climaxes, that he actually misses the climatic point, like his Liszt B minor sonata, anyone thinks so too?

Oh, a question for anyone who knows:  I saw Konstantin Scherbakov's recital the other day, and he played a couple of pieces from the Nutcracker for encores.  Afterwards I asked him if he is recording them, but he said no one is allowed because pletnev wouldnt give people the right to.  But I have a EMI CD with Simon Trzpeski playing them, whats the deal?

Pletnev is GREAT..
I saw him playing at a solorecital in Eindhoven, I think he's technically great!
Dunno why he's rare mentioned, maybe he's less commercial than other pianists these days?  :-\
