She did the Chopin Nocturnes and they were probably the best I've heard and some of my colleagues agreed that she did them best. I am having a hard time finding her name.  I think she was a winner of some of villa lobos awards or someone like that and they found her young.  Thanks

John

The late Brazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes? (she is featured in the Phillips "Great Pianist of the 20th century series)

The brazilian pianist María Joao Pires recorded the Chopin's Nocturnes for Decca, though I have not heard them. I like her Mozart's Sonatas very much.

Er... Maria João Pires is actually Portuguese. ;)

There is of course Martha Argerich (Argetinian), but I dont think she is particularly well known for Chopin Nocturnes. My bet is still on Guiomar.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Perhaps Sonia Rubinsky? She has recorded a lot of Villa-lobos on Naxos, and the CDs have very good reviews. Don't know if she's recorded CHopin nocturnes though.
