tight hand?
on: April 23, 2005, 08:21:36 AM
i had a massage the other week and was told that on my right hand the left side of the palm, the squishy bit that goes up to your pinky, was a bit tight. but i couldn't really feel anything out of that. but now i can. i'm thinking it's either related to stretching my hand in uncomfortable positions too much or using the mouse on my computer too much. either way, how do you stretch that part of your hand? in fact how can it be tight in the first place when there's no actual muscle there is there? it's just tendons and stuff, or so i think, but like i know what i'm talking about...

There are indeed strong muscles in this part of the hand: hypothenar group: flexor digiti minimi brevis, abductor digit minimi, opponens digiti minimi.

Check out:
https://www.dartmouth.edu/~anatomy/wrist-hand/muscles/intrinsic2.html

The pinky and the thumb are the only fingers that have fairly powerful intrinsic muscles in the hand. The muscles in the hand for the other fingers are very weak in comparison.

These muscles are often well developed in pianists and other people who use their fingers a lot, resulting in a squarish look of the hand.

I don't know about how to specifically stretch that part, other than closing and opening the hand, but look at https://www.musicianshealth.com to get some ideas.
