Your ideal image of a female pianist
on: April 25, 2005, 12:50:41 AM
I realize that we all attend concerts primarily because of how we feel the performer sounds vs how they look  ;), but what if we could create "rock star" pianists?  What would you want?  (what do men want, what do women want to be?)

totally untouchable; even a little cold

down to earth and friendly

completely sexy

little princess

farm girl

sweet and shy

etc etc

or some combination of them all?

If an artist changes the image from time to time, would it depend on venue and/or repertoire?

I am actually fine in that department.  I am simply conducting a little research amongst people whom I assume attend concerts frequently and have pianist-friends, and could offer some honest opinions.

I'm sorry, but do we pianists not ever think about image?  I'm not fully convinced it should be this way if it is.

Okay, yes I do think about image.  For example, there's this really pretty dress I have, but it has spaghetti straps.  I have no problem with other people wearing them, but I feel a little exposed personally.  I don't want to convey a "sexy" image when I'm playing.  I don't want people to remember me like that.  So I'd go for the more elegant, tasteful style.  My teacher says that you should convey a confidence that the music will speak for itself and does not need you to "dress it up" too much.  Not so much a fan of liberace, you could say ;D

I just recently checked out Angela Hewitt's website and she has professional photos of herself as well as a bunch of regular everyday photos.  I thought it was quite smart really, as she managed to sell a more sexy side of herself as well as that down to earth, friendly person side.  It just got me thinking.

But what's wrong with just being the whole package?  I don't think that women should feel like they have to dress themselves down, if they feel really good in a spaghetti strap dress.  I have nothing against tasteful, but why not mix it up?  Especially for photos.

I think a woman can be tastefully sexy too, not just straight to liberace-style tendencies.

Maybe it's a girl thing.  Maybe it's a naive, Christian, homeschooled, girl thing, but I don't want people to see a sexy side of me.  A pretty side, but not sexy.  If other people are into the sexy thing, so be it, but it doesn't sit well with me.  Why do you think people want to look sexy as opposed to just plain pretty?  I think it's the trend of the century or something.  Maybe they want a guy........  I don't get it.  I think I was sheltered :P

i don't think spagetti straps would suggest sexy.  how your outfit appears relies more on your attitude, so if you go out there feeling like a sex bomb then you're gonna look like one. but if you feel classy then you'll look classy. personally i like classy.
but what about the men? they should be classy too, not that they have much choice...

Wear the spagetti straps. Why not look sexy? I always dress up - flirt with the audience.

I like a more casual affair.  In fact, I am quite fond of blonde hair with a (tightish)green sweater and a (shortish) skirt.  Also, it would be awesome if she played Festin d'Esope or Brahms' Paganini Variations.

oOoOo maybe a strapless ... long legs ... oOoOo (drools uncontrollably then falls down on the ground).
Seriously, if a woman has the goods, then why not use them to her advantage?  I DO like the idea that a woman can be pretty rather than sexy, however, that is a very good idea, and I've definitely seen it implemented before.  You shouldn't have to wear something sexy.   But if you want...

Did anyone see the recent Enterprise episode where they're stuck in an alternate reality, it's wartime, and all the women that are serving on the ship wear a tank top uniform?  I actually thought it was incredibly UN-sexy, to tell you the truth, those tank tops didn't really do it for me.  But anyway ...

My ideal image would be a dress that is a little revealing from the back, maybe red or blue dress, but even green, and a hair style that rocks.  Yes, I am a guy :p

Since I'm riffing on the theme, I think T'Pol the Vulcan (Jolene Blalock) playing Alkan  would be quite ideal.

I'm almost 20.  I've been playing piano for 1 year, 6 months, and and 28 days, officially.  I mean thats when I started taking lessons.  I couldn't do much before that though (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge).  I don't train Huskies, but I do have a toy poodle named Abby, and a long haired chiuaua, named Ben.  When I grow up (lol), I want to teach piano, and eventually become an examiner.  How about you.  You do realize that we're totally hijacking this thread now. ;D

I think she has a good balance between classy and sexy, what do you think?

Would the photo itself, of Naida Cole, interest you in the individual as a pianist more than this one:

Actually, I think that the photo of Christine Anderson is interesting because that image really works for her.  She sells it well and it seems to suit her.  Maybe that is a better goal than just trying to look one way or another and have it not really represent some part of who you are.

I find the same to be true with Elena Hammel, her image is very much her own and quite unique.

btw- I think creating an appropriate image can be just as artistic as anything else, I guess that's the main point behind bringing it up.
