I can't get a forte on this piano.
on: April 25, 2005, 07:16:17 PM
There's a piano I have to use for my school talent show, which is Thursday. Anyway, I'm playing Turkish March which needs to be really loud at the ends. Problem is, I can't get it much louder than the pianissimo in the beginning. I don't think I'm supposed to bang my hands on the keys, and even then it doesn't work on this piano. Any help?

I think I've been spoiled by my light, digital piano.

It sounds like you're dealing with what my piano tuner calls "a piece of furniture that looks like a piano." If you can't get a forte when you bang, I'd say you're out of luck. (There isn't anything blocking the sounding board, is there?...Once saw a piano with some corrugated cardboard pinned on the back to muffle the sound.) Could you bring your digital piano in??

If it's an upright, opening the top may help a bit.  (If it's a grand, I'm assuming the lid is already open).

Have someone else play it while you sit in the seats. I once played a piano that I could not hear as I played it, later to find out I was making the audience deaf.

Also, use your entire body for a full, non-pounding FF technique.

No hopes of changing pianos. :( I'm stuck with it.

Opening the top? I hope that'll work and that they'll let me do it.

It's not really THAT soft. More like a mf that NEVER changes.

A piano teacher made it go really loud, at least that's what I felt. But I don't know if I'm that loud.
My piano teacher never taught me about it, but I'll try.
