20th century piece

Need recommendations for a 20th century piece that would fit the following program:

Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, WTC Book 1- Bach
Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat, D.960- Schubert
Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13- Schumann
Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52- Chopin
Etude in E Minor, Op. 25 No. 5- Chopin
Etudes-Tableaux in A Minor, Op. 39 No. 6- Rachmaninoff

Recommendations have been the Copland Variations or Sonata, 3 Barcarolles by Rorem (sp?) and the Boulez First Sonata.

I'm leaning towards Boulez right now, but suggestions would be welcomed.

3. is this a competition or regular recital program?

oh, ok. as the norm goes, they'll pick and choose. they'll ask you to play part of schubert, bach, and others, and will stop you when they want. needless to say, programming for college auditions is not as sensitive a matter as that for public recitals. as for 20th century work, i guess anything rather substantial won't hurt no body.

Hi SteinwayGuy.

The composers you already have are fairly "standard" (Bach, Schubert, Chopin, Rach) - - - I would throw a huge wrench in the predictability of your repertoire - - - give the professor's you'll be auditioning for something REFRESHING and eye-catching (I suspect these profs probably hear the Chopin's ballades and etudes a hundred times a semester).  The 20th C. gives you tons to choose from!  Have you explored the spanish-esque genre?

Last night I heard my son's piano teacher play Renee Jacques's Second Suite for Piano -- don't know if it's in your level, but it's amazing stuff - very virtuosic, all over the keyboard, and very 20th century.

Check out Carl Vine's piano sonata (the first one, from 1991), it might be something for you. Beautiful music, and quite virtuosic.
