Encores

What are your favorite encores? Do you play showy pieces or lyrical pieces, or both?

Also, what would you recommend as an encore for the following program?

Mozart K.332
Beethoven Opus 7
Chopin Etudes Op. 10 No. 1, 3, 4 Op. 25 No. 7
Chopin Ballade No. 4
Liszt Mephisto Waltz

I don't want to learn anything new, as this recital is two and a half weeks away, so I have considered Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, Schumann's Traumerei, Scarlatti Sonata K.491 and Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 No. 3. I've also thought a little about learning the Khachaturian Toccata because of all this talk about it being really easy but showy...

I think it's good to have your encore differ from your program.  So you would choose a flashy piece if you were playing a fairly "tame" program, but something more lyrical if your program was a bunch of Liszt and Alkan.

From your list, I'd pick the Scarlatti.

As much as I dislike the piece, I'd go with the Allegro Barbaro if only to contrast the styles of all else that you're playing (and time period).  It is also good to leave the audience with something probably new and interesting that they most likely have not heard before.
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.

your program is showy enough you should consider somthing lyrical
try schuman's chopin from carnaval it's very short and touching you can learn it in less than a week it'd make a prefect encore to your program.

I agree, you have the 'show' factor down. You should learn something passionate like a Liszt Consolation, Liebstaum... Something of that nature. But not 2 weeks before a performance! But something slow and passionate is always good to have in your repotoire.

Some lyrical pieces that I play are - Liszt Consolation No. 4 and Scriabin Etude No. 1 Op. 2 ... Both are fairly easy  ;D

Go with Schumann Toccata, op. 7. 8)

Can't learn and perform that in two weeks  ::)

I just had the great idea of the Rachmaninoff Vocalise, arranged by Richardson, so if I can get my hands on that...and soon...

Hello Everyone

Please can someone explain what they mean when they use the term encore because i for one get confused with the term. i think this could help the thread out and maybe i can contribute.

p.s I have heard that Gershwin - Prelude 1 is an Encore, it's afast fun piece. Has this got anything to do with the term. At the moment i am guessing that an Encore is a really entertaining piece for the audience.

Steinwayguy: Actually, i'm somewhat put off by your following the fourth ballade with the mephisto, the chopin is so much the superior work, and its really hard to follow it with a technical showpiece*... if i were in your shoes i might do something eccentric like cut the liszt off the program, and use it as the encore... of course i'd probably make cuts in it anyway because it's long and repetitive...
