I'm about to buy some sheet music..
on: April 30, 2005, 11:02:41 PM
I've been saving some money to buy some sheet music, and I'll probably order everything tomorrow. I love making my library of sheet music larger  :)  because I don't own much sheet music yet.

Anyway, there are a few things I'm interrested in but I'm not quite sure if it's worth buying them. For instance, I see that there's a quite cheap Dover edition of Medtner's "Fairy tales", and I might buy it, but I've only heard one of the fairy tales (op 26 no 1, played by Hamelin). I really loved it and I'm interrested in hearing more, but I'm not sure if the other fairy tales are as good and if it's worth buying the book. Perhaps someone here know more about them and could tell me if it's a good buy? Any help would be great!

Think I'll buy Rach 3 too, but I'm not sure which edition. G. Schirmers is a lot cheaper, and most Schirmer editions I've bought have been fine. But perhaps it's better to spend 20 extra dollars for a better edition? hmmm...

I'll probably buy Carl Vine's first sonata too... has anyone heard it? I love that work.
I'll also buy Khachaturians "10 pieces for the young pianist" and Villa-lobos "A prole do bebe", both of them really nice music. And I'm buying some jazz sheet music too.

Anyway, I have money so I can buy some more sheet music... since you've seen what I consider buying, you kind of get the idea of what kind of things I like... So what I'm saying is that any suggestions for what you think is good music (perhaps similar music to what I'm buying), please let me know! I'm interrested.
And if you have answers to my questions about Medtner and different publishers, post it here.

Yeah, I'm sure its a great edition, but the price is really high. Schirmers edition is for 9.95, and Boosey's is for about 30 dollars...  :'(

I was thinking about buying some Scriabin too... Found cheap Dover publications again - I like dover :) They have the complete piano sonatas in one book, and the complete preludes and etudes in another. A third book has other various works, like impromtus, nocturnes etc etc..

Which one should I start with? :) The sonata book, the preludes and etudes book, or the various works book? I haven't played any scriabin (only read some stuf basically a vista - the beginning of his 2nd sonata for instance which was beautiful! and some preludes)... I suppose that a sonata would require too much work, although I really love some of them and think I could manage to learn a whole sonata. However, most preludes and etudes are quite short and perhaps it would be more fun to learn several shorter pieces... I don't know.

Although I'm not against looking at the sheet music, I don't think it would tell me much of the quality until I would sit down and play it. And to do that, I have to buy the sheet music anyway...
Have you played some of them? Do you think it's worth buying them?

How about Cortot's book "Rational Principles of Piano Technique", any thoughts on it? I wanted to buy it, people have said that it's very good.. Anything else of the same kind that I should consider buying, instead or together with this one?
