Good Music to play at night clubs/parties
on: May 01, 2005, 04:46:56 AM
I'm hoping to start playing at night clubs, restauraunts or parties and wanted to know if anyone could suggest some good music to play.  If anyone knows of any good books with lots of good choices, that would be fantatstic!

Well, I'm sort of old, so this might not work for your gigs... depends on audience age and the energy level of a particular night... but I think Noel Coward, Gershwin, Cole Porter, especially if you want to get a date out of it.  Good luck!

I'd reckon just play songs everyone knows and can sing along to.  Hey Jude, Great Balls of Fire, Hotel California and then if you want to stun them with your virtusity just give them a bit of Art Tatum or something.  But learn songs you think people will request, it's always great when you can play what they ask.

any old jazz standard
 ;D
You need more than a piano, two hands and a brain to play music.  You also need hot sauce.

Are there any good books out there with good transcriptions of some jazz standards for solo piano?

I did this for a few years until I had the children. I can't play a thing without music, so always took a packed music bag. There's a series of books that have well known songs in jazz arrangements, I think it's called Cocktail piano something, pieces such as Smoke gets in your eyes, Pennies from heaven, Fascinating Rhythm etc. I always had a Gershwin book in there and 101 No.1 hits, which covers 60's up to the 90's. If you need help looking for work, I used the Yellow Pages then contacted entertainment agencies  :)
