update about college
on: May 20, 2003, 02:04:15 AM
Well, I contacted my piano teacher about starting a program to get into the conservatory. She basically told me that I was starting too late in life to accomplish gettting into the school in 2 years. She told me that the people that go to conservatories have been playing since they were 5-6 and did competitions in their teens. Basically, I am way out of my league. She says that I can still become a great pianist and have potential. She told me of another good school around here. I had thought about going into that school before anyways, so we started a program to do that. I had to basically drop alla Turca though, she started me on Bach's 2-part invention no. 8 and Haydn's Sonata No. 34 in D major.  I am really busy with these pieces and don't have alot of time to work on Alla Turca (I am also working on praise music). Mark my words though, I shall return to the piece and conquer!!!! LOL!!!

Great, I'm glad to hear you are doing the Inventions. No matter where you go you 'll always have to work through them. Plus, going this route is a much more stable way to learn piano. Maybe slower, but in the long run it will pay off.

BTW, I don't know about a conservatory. But, you can be very succesful in a music department at a college. Look around you'll see you'll be able to reach the acceptance standard. It's not preparation for a career on the concert stage (maybe though), but for teaching in Highschools and at the college level. There is so much you can do.

Also, in a year working on a invention is impressive, so you are making great progress. Also, learning as an adult has it's advantages, better comprehension of theory concepts and a better work ethic.

Thanks, the invention is really fun as is the Haydn Sonata. My teacher told me that the teacher route is probably my best bet, she said that I could become a jack of all trades in music. Right now, I am looking at going to Houston Baptist University. They have a great music program. I am currently getting my associates in Church music at a junior college and when I transfer I will get my bachelor's in Church music which is also a duel degree in teaching. That wasn't really my dream to do, but the more that I think about it, the more fun it will be. I am required to have a major and minor instrument in the degrees, so I will soon be learning another instrument along with my piano.
