Ok. I need to get some new, good, recordings of the Debussy Preludes and the Beethoven Sonatas, more specifically the "Pathetique".  I already have the Naxos recording of the Preludes, by Francois-Joel Thoillier, but I think theres something better out there.  Also, who plays the beethoevn sonatas the best??

Thanks alot  :)

For Debussy, you may want to try Gieseking, Samson François, Zimerman, ABM.

For Beethoven op 13... Kempff is very good. You may also want to try Gilels (live and studio) also.  These days, I listen to the Pathétique live by Richter.

Overall, I find Kempff is the most enjoyable Beethoven player.

I agree, but to add to your list of great Prelude recordings, try Jean-Eave Tibaudet (Excuse my spelling) - phenomenal playing, although I won't dispute Gieseking is the best!  ;D

I also love Wilhelm Kempff's Beethoven - so exciting.  Emmanuel Ax is probably pretty decent too!

Beethoven sonatas-
You'll probably need most or all of the following sets/recordings to be completely satisfied-

Just about anything or everything by:
Arrau
Brendel
Solomon
Michelangeli
Kempff
Goode
Frank
Annie Fischer
(I'm sure there are a lot that I forgot)

Some by:
Richter
Schnabel

She hasn't recorded the second book of debussy preludes, but the best performance of the first book I have heard is by Noriko Ogawa- so much different to any other recording (in a good way)

Well, I'm digging up this ancient thread (aka 1 week old) to anounce to you all that I got the First book of preludes played by Michelangeli and the Pathetique by Arrau.  I love them.  ;D I know you all care so much.........
