Piano and violin music
on: May 04, 2005, 08:09:44 AM
I want to listen to some Piano and Violin stuff but I am not familiar with this repertoire (except Cesar Franck sonata).

If you had one very piece to recommend, which would it be ? Interpretors recommendations will be welcome.

Thanks

Obviously, Beethoven. Kreutzer (No. 9) probably the greatest violin sonata yet written. The other ones are good too. Brahms wrote three (I like the second), Schumann wrote I believe two. Prokofiev has a great one. Debussy and Faure each have one. Mozart wrote a few.

Absolute best recording is Issac Stern's Beethoven... I think with Istomin?

Mozart wrote 19, I think.  They are quite wonderful, fun to play also.  And endlessly challenging.  You can always play them better, even when they seem perfect, there's something more that can be done.  Well, I guess that's always true, but sometimes M's accompaniments are simple enough that it seems like there's not much to do, but then there are all these deeper levels... anyway, what else?  Oh, well, Bach and Handel!  The violin/keyboard works are just spectacular when played stylishly.  They're so good that even with a drippy interpretation, it's great music.  My current favorites:  Rachel Podger & Trevor Pinnock, and Andrew Manze & Richard Egarr.  Marvelous!

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
