Does Yamaha also use the " Plastic" parts like kawai's ABS?
on: May 09, 2005, 05:00:34 PM
I read the article about Kawai "Plastic"
I think wood is just the traditional material for piano.
My question is
Does Yamaha also use the " Plastic" parts like kawai's ABS?
Thanks so much for your reply!

NOT in Yamaha's U-series uprights.
NOT in Yamaha's C-series grands.
NOT in Yamaha's S-series grands.
There may be some models of Yamaha that use synthetic material to make their action parts, but I am not entirely sure... but whether that's ABS or carbon composite or something else, I don't know. Keep in mind that carbon composite is quite new, so Kawai may still have a patent lock on that technology as it applies to pianos.
In any case, this is something that you can ask the Yamaha dealer and should expect a straight answer. When in doubt, ask them to show you the action and you can see with your own eyes (and feel with your own hands)whether it's wood or something else.
Good luck.

Carbon isn't that new. It's been around for a couple of decades. It's new in piano manufacturing, though, but I don't think a company can put a patent on materials whether it be wood or carbon. I have to go play on a Kawai with carbon composite action parts!

I don't know how you all feel about this, but I think I'd welcome a good quality composite material over wood if it came with the benefit of stability, durability, with no adverse effect on sound and action feel.
Today's pianos are quite an improvement over the original design, so why stop there and not contiune the evolution?

The only plastic part that Yamaha uses is the repition jack in some of the verts. It is not ABS, but a similar polymer. They used ABS in the past, but switch to a newer material they claim is superior.
