This poll is stupid.  Rob is stupid. Why is Hummel on the list?

Big Sonatas for next year! (POLL)
on: May 10, 2005, 01:21:06 AM
Well I've decided instead of annoyingly asking "What should i play blha blah blah balh am i ready for blah blah blah" to just make a poll with the option for you to rip on me if you feel the need.

I mean any sonata by Prokofiev, Beethoven etc.  But just one.  These composers all have seomthing I want to play but am curious on popular ones amongst this forum.

If you don't like anything up there choose option 9.

Rob  :)

Where are Chopin, Rachmaninov, Schubert (D960 is a great sonata in my opinion)  :)

My vote for Bartok. Why isn't Brahms up there? Or Schumann? You have Hummel and not Brahms??

Prokofiev 6 is a beast of a sonata and is in my humble opinion one of the greatest contributions to the genre in the 20thC. I havent ever heard you play but this sonata taxes everyone as does the Barber sonata - which i have herad said is the greatest sonata for solo piano in the 20th C - this is also a good choice. You could look at Ginestera sonata no1 and or any sonata by Medtner or Szmanowsky who are still underplayed! Whatever you do HAVE FUN! ;D Music is not all about being serious

Liszt's Sonata is one of the best pieces ever written if you ask me but just for the sake of it, go with Scriabin. The first movement of his first sonata is just amazing.

Try the grieg, it's underplayed but I  have to admit, I'm not fond of the final movement...  Either way though, it will take a while to learn, because it is 29 pages...  It is quite difficult in some places, and demands large hands especially for the first movement.  Give it a shot!

Thanks all. I cannot believe that so many people voted.  Funny prokofiev did well, because I had just bought the complete sonatas (kalmus) and was probably going to do #6 anyway, although three is equally awesome.  And 7 is just awesome in its....extreme attack on the listener.  My all time fav is 8, but it's so hard I think in so many ways.  So i think i'll embrace the challenges of #6: I started it today.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks to the 4 who told me I should focus on academics you're more right than you know  8)

And to the Rob is stupid/ Rob is juvenille/incompetent voters I love you guys more than anyone  :-*.  You should download my rap song in the audition room and fire one up.

as awesome as rach's b flat mmionr sonata is, uh, I'm having enough of my days taken up working on his concerto. For about a year now...ya i started after my jury last year, and am only beginning learning the finale this summer.

But that sonata is incredible, a friend of mine is playing it this year.

If you want to try something more modern, listen to Carl Vine's first piano sonata. It's amazing. I just got the sheet music - looks really difficult to learn, but I hope I can play it someday...
Another modern sonata I recommend is Grazyna Bacewicz 2nd sonata. A bit harder to listen to, especially the first movement. 2nd movement is very beautiful, and the third is a fast toccata.

Ginestera No.1 as previously suggested.  Firey and energetic.  Fun to play too.

Any Scriabin Sonata.  They are all wonderfull.  But if you do decide to take one up and haven't played Scriabin that much.   Look over the score, estimate how long it will take you to learn.... multiply that value by 4 or so and you should have enough time.  Scriabin takes a really long time to learn, but is extreemly rewarding to play.   It took me 7 months to learn the 5th sonata.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
