What do you play?

I'm curious what people are playing and more interested in whether or not
people who play music from more than one high-level genre have any sort
of "crossover skills" that help them playing in other styles.  Fill out the poll
and feel free to leave a comment.

Gosh, another surprising (to me ) poll result. Taken in conjunction with the poll about the elements of music, it seems that our forum comprises mostly classical players whose primary focus is harmony - interesting.

Hmm looks like we've got mainly classical pianists here? Heh this might be an assumption since the sample size is small =)

well i would expect that since most pianists who would go to a piano forum would be somewhat serious in developing their technique, solving problems, whereas people more interested in pop really wouldn't have as much of an issue with it. but that's a really prejudiced statement i guess.

Classical music is the best music there is on piano. It is only played by the best (me included) but is harder and needs skill. For example there is no non classical piece that can be compared to Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin. 8) 8) 8)

its the same at pianoworld, although they have a sepcial section for jazz and other styles, it hasnt had much time to take off...but its apparent that there is much more 'classical' focus on there, and here.

its interesting just how this board became so classical-orientated, maybe its the layout and look? and the word 'repertoire' perhaps?

maybe if it had a jazzier look and pictures of tatum, waller etc. it wouldve naturally deviated towards jazz?

and while were at it, are there any jazz/popular specific pianoforums out there?

its sad that your posts often go ignored in many threads, ted. because you mention popular/jazz pianists that none of us have heard of, and pieces/approaches too.

i for one, wish more people posted knowledgably about jazz/popular music, alot of us would learn alot.

that's ridiculous, go buy an Oscar Peterson CD and if his virtuosity doesent impress you (he can swing at any speed), then listen to some Chick Corea, his harmonic movement will blow you away. You are entitled to think that Classical music is the best. (It is awesome) but the statement "it needs skill" sounds a little ignorant. (I only gave you Jazz examples) there are others who could give you  examples in other genres.

I am playing only classical music now, after spending 7 years studying jazz and playing a lot of Pop. As soon as I am finished with my "letters" I will pursue jazz wholeheartedly again/
