Few questions from beginner
on: May 14, 2005, 02:00:12 AM
 :)
Im recently started to play the piano, I have played guitar for 5 years but have had no formal training. I have a few questions, some are pretty stupid :(

Am I too late?? (Stupid question i know, but its a pschylogical block for me, im 20 years old)

What should i do first?

Are lessons important?

How do i choose a piano teacher.

and finally,

what are some beginner songs to learn, i already learned the first part of Fur Elise and cant find anything else on the same skill level

Thanks a lot guys

You will find answers to a lot of your questions if you look around the board...but I would say the answer to most of your questions is "it depends."

What are your goals? You are unlikely to become a concert pianist starting at your age...but there are many, many other rewarding musical goals a person starting at your age (or much older) can reach.

What kind of music do you want to play? Who do you want to play for? How well do you want to play? (This is a serious question...will you be satisfied at being pretty good, or do you have to be the best you know?)

No matter what your answers, you will likely make much better progress towards your goals if you find a teacher...especially one who will take you towards your goals.

You are NEVER too late.

Get a teacher.

Are lessons important?

YES.

For the pieces, use the search fonction, and type : beginner pieces ( or things like that). You will find many interesting links!  :D

Here's a link to a thread that has links to most of Bernhard's posts.  You should be able to find almost any answers you need in there.

For beginner pieces here are a couple reccomendations

Schumann The Happy Farmer
Bach Minuet in G major
Prelude in C major from WTC bk1
Grieg The Cowherd's Song from the Lyric pieces

There's also a thread in the teaching forum about good pieces for beginners.  You may wanna hop over there and check it out.

In my opinion, you should get a teacher as soon as possible. And yes, the lessions he is going to teach you are important.
