Weird question...
on: May 15, 2005, 04:15:27 AM
Can you hear yourself swallow?

I can. Even with just saliva I can always hear sort of a click sound; really bothers me.  :-\

that click sound...if you hear the click right by the ear..or under the ear..you have an acute sign of TMJ..which is minor arthritis in the jaw...i have this..i got it ecause i have somewhat high blood pressure and clench/grind my teeth when i sleep..now i have to wear a retarted mouth piece when i sleep..*sigh*..but yeah..if it continues..you have TMJ..but if its just a temporary thing..you might have just eaten something that was strenuous on your jaw..is the clicking on one side/..or both?

I had this for like 6 months, it really annoyed me, i didn't know it was a sign of anything else though, maybe i ought to get it checked out, but it's almost gone now.  I would say it's probably worth checking out, if you don't have to go through six months of it it's probably better.

Maybe it's what your talking about, but I think the sound comes from my esophogas. It sounds like what you hear when other people drink a big gulp of liquid - but I have that all the time. Maybe I'm just being hypochondriatic.

yeah i started like this, i reckon it's mainly in your mind, that bit went away quite fast.  Just learn to relax and not think about it (it's hard), and also try doing other things at the same time as swallowing, scratch your nose, drum on the table, anything that occupies your mind at the time of swallowing, it's because you're thinking of the the action of swallowing instead of letting your body do it naturally.  If you got the same thing as i did, don't worry too much.  for one people don't notice as much as you think and for two it'll go away soon enough.

yeah, any clicking in the jaw joint is due to an irregularity in the jaw. Mine IS minor, but because of my jaw habbits i have to take these kinds of precautions. BUt the majority of people with TMJ or any jew irregularities that experience clicking/popping/grinding when eating/swallowing dont really need medical attention and function properly and simply zone the annoying sound from their out of their head. Although ignorance is bliss, i always advise people to still keep track of its status, trust me, i cant eat hard candy or some steak because that takes lots of chewing.

I always thought those little clicks with swallowing, yawning or simulated yawning were quite normal - natural clearing of the eustachian tubes. It's when they don't occur - after a cold say - that I am aware of their absence. Once the clicks occur again I know the congestion has cleared.
