I was looking forward to watching it but just found out that I'm going to be pretty busy while it's on.

Anyone know how/if I can "record" the live broadcast and watch later?

What did everybody think of the first four competitors?  I didn't get to hear the first lady, but I'd have to say that the first guy (the one from italy) was the weakest.  Granted, the sound was out during a good portion of his Bach piece, but his Stravinksy in particular wasn't as strong as other performances I've heard of it.  Especially in the last movement, it seemed like the energy and tempo in the piece jumped around and I've always felt that that movement is meant only to gain momentum, excitement, and energy (not necessarily speeding up, mind you) as it gets closer to the end, not to lose it.

Overall, I was very impressed with all of their playing though.  And thier facial features and gestures were quite amusing to watch.

Yeah, that guy was awesome.  Apparently he's really likes Liszt.  If he makes it to the finals, he's going to play the entire first year of Annes.

I loved Cabassi and thought Mamriev was entirely flat.

How was Braide?  I had technical issues and missed it.

Well, I think Franceschetti did not disappoint.  Great Schumann.  Great Beethoven.  I didn't care that much for the Schoenberg, but that just me not loving the piece.  Straight into the second round, I think.

I thought the best of Fong's performance was her Haendel.  She played the crap out of the piano with her redition of Keith Leighton's 6 Studies - Variation, but again, what a strange choice of repertoire.  Same goes to a bunch of early Rachmaninov she insterspersed between a lovely Lilacs, a thorough Prelude in B-flat major and some other forgettable stuff.  She was great, but 23 great pianist will be eliminated in the first round.   How sad.

I didn't see much yesterday (Just Akapova, Mamriev, and Kolomiytseva), but from those three I'd put my money with Lilian Akapova. Her Bach was incredible, as was the Liszt that followed. I also found Mamriev rather flat.

Sa Chen just played today - I got the impression she has a lot of technique but is somewhat shallow in her interperetations. Chopin's Op. 25-6 and Feux Follets were both pretty incredible, but her Gaspard seemed somewhat boring (even if she did hit all the notes).

(Stephen Beus is playing now, I'll hold my opinion of him 'till later)

so far, i loved petroushka. everything else was (for me) good but just good. but then again, i haven't heard braide, franceschetti and fong (way too late for me). anyway, i'm impressed about the general athmosphere - nothing competition-like!

Sa Chen, lots of technique, and very original.  I did not find her shallow at all; reminds me of Ashkenazy.

I loved Beus, but I fear he is precisely the type of pianist that gets eliminated early.  Great Chopin sonata.  Very American-sounding Barber (nothing like Horowitz or Olga Kern).

Plano is a musicians' pianist.  Sadly no enough technical display to go forward.

Grynyuk was the one that sounded shallow to me.  I have seen pianists like this go forward and it would not surprise me if he gets chosen ahead of more deserving musicians.

Oh, my! What a session!  Roe and Lee were both very good.  I give the edge to Roe among the two, as she plays with more concentration and depth.  Great to have them both play La valse so close in time.

Do not miss the matinee session tomorrow.  Koltakov, Mazo and Martinez might very well all be in the finals (this what in soccer we would call the group of death).  We will see if they meet expectations.

Has anybody just heard Zlabys, Actually this is the most disgusting time i have ever heard Beethoven's Tempest. The third movement was too much fast and too unclear in terms of musicality. Moreover, i don't know why he made this strange gestures (he looked like as if he was blind or something). 8)

Yeah.  Zlabys, how sad, just beat Mamriev as the weakest so far.  Even worse sorrounded by the strongest session so far, with Koltakov and Martinez really putting high numbers in there.

I already have five I think should go forward (Martinez, Koltakov, Andaloro, Roe and Franceschetti).  There will not be enough room for even the very good ones!

I thought Plano was really great - especially the Brahms. Beus sort of disappointed me - I didn't hear the Barber to the end (and if that was his strongpoint, then I've probably got a misguided impression of him), but I didn't find his other playing to be out of the ordinary. It was good, for sure, but it didn't shine past any of the others.

Unfortunately I missed Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, so I've no comment about that. :(

I missed all but the last couple of pages of Moutouzkine, he sounded good and I remember him as a grand manner pianist from last time.  Anything good?  I would find it most helpful if you can compare him with Koltakov and Martinez, whom I heard today.

You can enable something on realplayer called perfectplay, chich will cache the stream for up to 12 hours. Just listen for some audio landmark on the KTCU stream, then pause it and turn up the volume on the video stream, when it reaches the same spot, press play on the KTCU stream. good luck

Love her or hate her, but indifferent you can't be to Mariya Kim.  She reminded me of Bolet; so much power, such line!

I think my browser was playing games on me, because I heard some measures in the last page I had never registered in either version of the sonata.  I doubt it was ex tempore, but if it was, shame on the jury if they take that into consideration.  She should go through.

In fact,  I like her with Koltakov, Andaloro and Martinez in the finals.

Anyone heard Xiaohan Wang?  I missed this afternoon.

LOVE chu-fang!!!  since i haven't heard the pianists that came before (due to technical difficulties), i vote for her tonight.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.
