Tough decision for me between Ballades, Scerzos, Nocturnes, Sonatas, Etudes

CRAP I voted Scherzos even though Sonatas would be my choice.

Oh well.

Easily mazurkas with impromtpus being a close section (the latter would have cinched it had it not been bogged down by the Fantasie Impromptu ::) which really isn't a terrible piece at all, I'm just so sick of it).

I would also be tempted to say "other" for the Fantasie, Variations, and Barcarolle, all of which have always ranked very high with me!

Still, it just has to be the mazurkas.

For me, there is a close race for Etudes or Ballades but the Ballades holds better in the long run. I never get tired of these wonderful story telling piano compositions and to quote myself from pianosociety.com:

"Chopin's Ballades represents the highest art of music and are undoubtedly among his most important works. I remember an old book I read where the writers friend during a meeting with fellow lovers of Chopin's music spontaneously called out "All Beethoven's Sonatas for a Chopin Ballade". That should say it all. Chopin's first Ballade took him a great effort to produce and occupied him, on and off, for two years. In Chopin's Ballades, control and deployment of passion in their combination of immediacy and inner logic show us not once but repeatedly how art derives order from chaos."

This is a really good thread but it is so difficult to answear (for me). I have chosen the etudes even though i haven't started learning them yet but there are others that deserve the vote. It's probably better/easier to pick favourite works within each Set and it is more intricate to do that.

I voted for Scherzos.
Come on, if we want 100 votes, someone has to reply to make sure the poll is up the top.

I wish that I had chosen Nocturnes, because I do like those more than the etudes, which I voted for...

I am still surprised by the 0 votes for Polonaises, after 50 votes !!  :o :o

Probably, many have them as their 2° or 3° choice, but not their top one !! And thus, the poor polonaises are relegated to the last position  :-\ :-\

72 votes !!!

We are approaching the 100 mark, that is what i want  :D :D

It seems that the Ballades will win, tough. Not my choice, but they are awesome (i have 2 versions of them, by Ashkenazy and Biret)

PD: i am glad someone did vote the Polonaises !!!

I had difficulty choosing between the Etudes and the Preludes...  ::)
And I ended up choosing Preludes, maybe because of the great influence, you made the poll right on the day that I saw a great performance on TV by Andras Schiff of all the Preludes... On a Pleyel piano! I just loved it...  8)

as a set? I've got to say the preludes, inspired by the WTC, the pieces just fit in so well as a whole, and if I was giving a Chopin recital, I would do the complete set of preludes. It just works so well as a collection. The others are great pieces, but I couldn't handle playing or hearing them as a set, the preludes have the perfect balance :)
