What type of music do you listen to/fav artist(s)

i've been playing for 9 years I like classical but i mostly listen to punk, metal and alternative...i was just curious as to what others on the forums like to listen to

I actually used to only like popular music, but I soon found out that everything I liked about it could be found and amplified in classical music.  Now, I see popular music as somewhat shallow and tend to only listen to stuff written at least a century ago.  My favorite era of composition is probably from the mid to late 1800s- when life was passionate and decisions were of life and death.-A time of fairy tales and busy opera theatres.  Nowadays, life is soooo comfortable - great for living, but fatally boring for music.

To tell the truth, I really never listened to punk, metal or alternative on a regular basis.  Maybe I am ignorant for saying this, but I tend to get tired of it really fast because it seems to be all the same from the beginning, middle and end.  Now I see why on these stations that play this music never let the piece finish.  We always have some really annoying dj inturrupting and making stupid noises with his synthesizer, and then moving on to the next piece of music.  It seems as if the primary function of music nowadays is for entertaining an audience without patience.  I see teenagers walk around with earphones on and the music turned up so high, when I walk past, it just sounds like they are listening to feedback.  To me, they look more like decrepit old people clinging to their oxygen masks rather than enjoyers of music.

But like I said, maybe Im ignorant for saying this.  I am sure you are different - you claim to like classical, so perhaps you keep an open mind.

Tell me, what is it about punk, metal, and alternative that makes you keep listening?

I used to listen to a lot of punk and retrospectively a lot of it was really bad (I still like against me! and alkaline trio a lot though) but the aspect of punk that always got to me was just this feeling of desperation and being pushed against a wall and then raging blindly and violently against whatever's doing the pushing.

Now I listen to selected favorites from a lot of genres but other than classical, mainly reggae (which I never understood until I herd redemption song and realized a sort of similarity with punk in the feeling of being repressed but reggae's more about knowing fatalistically aand praying with hope that the man's gonna get what's comin to him) and whatever genres velvet underground and pink floyd are.

Very well said. I really feel the same way about music that is currently popular. It is designed for by and for people with no patience. There is such a taboo in preffering classical music to popular at a young age, that is why a lot more people don't admit to it. It could just be a phase i am going through but the only modern pop/rock music i can honestly say that i am into is REM (whose songs i beleive are genius). These are proper proffesional songwriters who continoue to amaze me.

just heard rebecca luker on the radio today, and had to listen again at barnes and noble.  she has a cd out entitled 'anything goes.'  it's a combo of cole porter stuff and whatever else she sings.  she has a very clear voice and i believe recently had a recital at lincoln center.  ok.  you can tell i am dating myself, sort of, but i do like singers of all types.

i happen to love musicals, too. any and all.  in fact, i sort of wish i was born during the broadway period, because the singing, acting, dancing make it opera for today.

it's strange, but unless i know i'm going to hear a really good pianist, i usually go for listening to vocal music.  even country, sometimes.  the lyrics make me laugh, cry, or whatever - and sometimes think i could be a lyricist/composer.  if i have an image or something in my mind, usually a tune will appear quickly.  and, if i have even a small inspiration to write lyrics, i can usually come up with something.

it's strange, but unless i know i'm going to hear a really good pianist, i usually go for listening to vocal music.  even country, sometimes. 

lol my sister is always listening to country!  I laugh at how the subject matter is all the same  i.e.- my pickup truck broke down, Thelma-Lue has left me for the 4th time, the washing machine is broken and I need money to fix it, but I really should set out time to go fishing with the boy and play baseball, etc etc
and that accent - mwahahha  ah just caint ounderstaynd whah..

As well as classical, I listen to (and play) jazz, rock, prog-metal, blues and fusion. I play electric guitar to a very high standard, and these are what I play on the guitar. Piano though, its classical and jazz all the way.

I also like latin instrumental music which i find really relaxing to listen to. I am hoping to someday get into a latin piano repetoire as well. I would love to play some really good versions of 'Girl from Ipanema', 'Wave' and 'Corcovado' bu thats bossa nova for you.

you have to 'get into it.'  that means, to go get a pair of cowboy boots, turn up the radio, and roll down all the windows.  the music sounds better that way.  i went through a country kick about a year after i had my third baby.  at the end of the day, when i went to the groc. store (after hubby got home) i would do all three.  my parents, children, husband, all thought i went nuts.  of course, even though i am a classical pianist and was accompanying a master chorale at the time, i still wore my boots to practice.  they are not practical for pedalling but they are good for beating time.

I like Primus. They're virtuoso metal.  The Lang Lang's of metal.  Although I'm not even sure if they are in the genre of metal.  They have they're own sound.

Also wu tang, soundgarden, jay-z, green day, nas, 2pac, stonetemplepilost, GNR, thelonius monk, and others.

Also anyone been listening to the band Muse?  They're lead singer palys piano and guitar at concerts.  He sounds classically trained and incorporates Rachmaninoff rip offs into their music really well.  They're probably my fav right now.

Muse are huge in the UK, one of the biggest bands around at the moment. Yeah, the singer is classically trained, both piano and singin. Apparently he's quite a virtuoso pianist. Their latest album "Absolution" is really cool.

i went off typical mainstream music when i was about 16 and became obsessed with classical. so prior to that it was like blink182, red hot chilli peppers, and blah. but i've found that i really dislike drums and the 'doosh doosh' parts of that kind of music, it's highly annoying now. so i can't really stand it. but i do like french pop cos it's hilarious! and i love my disney classics cd haha. oh and some sixties music, and ABBA. anything written today is rubbish i have absolutely no idea what bands are out there or what they're singing.
i'm really into renaissance and medieval choral music at the moment, my mum finds it depressing and boring but it's lovely! so yeah, that's really cool

Well, I don't really listen to much popular/rock/whatever music at all really, but I will mention U2, who have always been one of my favourite bands (in no small part due to their Irishness!), and also Queen (yes, Queen--I like their "operatic" style in most of their songs), Van Halen, whose guitar playing appeals to me greatly, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard. I dislike mostly anything written more recently than 1990, with a few exceptions, and prefer 70's or 80's rock. There are probably several other groups I can't remember now, which only goes to show you how much I *really* listen to 'em!
