A Community for Young Composers
on: May 21, 2005, 11:39:14 PM
The website Young Composers used to be a thriving community where  people composing music posted pieces, gave feedback, and discussed music. It is mostly dead, now, due to lack of owner motivation and a crappy board engine. I myself was an active member of these boards from the years 2001 to 2003, at which point I had to stop because school demands were getting too great.

An attempt is being made, however, to revive an old tradition. I invite you to join the NEW Young Composers' Message Board community if you are interested. Know that there is currently no other known resource on the internet that brings together young composers in a message board community.

I personally have high hopes for these boards. I envision boards where any young composer can come post their works and receive abundant feedback from musicians from all over the globe, and where lengthy discussions of music theory and philosophy are held. Those who sign up now can be a part of this new movement from the very start. Who's up to it?

It sounds like an excellent idea. My only questions are what age constitutes "young" and why only young composers ? It just seems a rather odd criterion to apply to music. By eliminating old people you might be missing out on a lot of good ideas.

Back in the prime of the boards, we had a 35-year old, a bunch of college students, several high school students, and some even younger people starting to dabble in composition. So the point is, the composers don't need to be "young"; it's just that we're not looking for a community of a bunch of professional composers that are all stuck in their ways and already educated and know how they are going to compose.

"Young" implies exploration, implies still developing and open to comments; it implies that you're still open to new musical philosophical viewpoints and that you're still trying to figure everything out for yourself. And if you're 78 years old and this applies to you, then Young Composers is where you want to be.

Hmmm, I really like that.  Now, I am pretty sure that I am 204 but I think that your description of young still applies to me.  So, am I still young?  ;D

I perused the site and it looks interesting, thanks for spreading the good news  :D

Sounds really interesting! However, I tried to visit your board but couldn't connect - there seems to be a problem with the server...

Yes, the board does go out intermittently, mostly because it's on a free server. However, the creator of the boards has said that if we can get at least 20 people to sign up AND at least 12 people to post actively, he will buy a domain name and get his own server, which would solve all of the bandwidth problems. That's not too far off!
