Ballade in g minor

How do you play the first page, with pedal or without?

(I know I'm the hundredth person to post a topic about this song, sorry :-[)

the first page -with pedal the opening passage, um i use pedal, but only use it if you can make it sound like your not using it. was that worded right ? :) :)

Yes, pedal every note of the first line (intro).  Or every other note.  You want a real full rich sound, so pedal.  And be sure to make it sound legato.

yes, it's opus 23. In my edition the bottom some of the notes have stacattos with legattos attached to them. This is supposed to mean non legato, I guess. Does anyone elses edition have this? That's why I was confused about the pedal. I know it sounds better with pedal, but you can't play non legato with pedal.

i think stacattos with a legato marking mean portamento
