Another recital program~
on: May 22, 2005, 04:10:06 PM
Hi everyone!... im getting ready for my junior recital now, and wanted to know what everyone thinks of the program... am also open to suggestions for a final piece to end with. Thanks!!
1. Mozart variations on 'Ah, vous dirai je, maman?'
2. Three Chopin etudes (op.10 #5,6,12)
3. Chopin ballade #4 in f
4. Grieg sonata
Note: my recital requirement is only 30 min, which I more than fullfill I think, but I would still like a final piece to dazzle the audience, besides the Grieg, which doesnt end very dramatically. Liszt perhaps?

Sure--I think the 6th Hungarian Rhapsody would fit nicely, or perhaps an etude like the 2nd Paganini Etude, or Wilde Jagd, Chasse-Niege, etc.

Throw in some Debussy? I love impressionist music, Ravel perhaps? Don't know if it would go perfectly with what you have chosen already, but I'm sure something would work out..

You want a *dazzling* ending, right? I recommend choosing a short, light piece, such that it is more of a dessert to the Chopin and Grieg -- which are, of course, the main dish, if you will -- than a main course in itself. Someone mentioned Debussy, and that could be a really great idea! Something not too heavy but can really thrill an audience in a very short amount of time. How about something like Dr. Gradus Ad Parnassum from Children's Corner? Very short, but never fails to thrill; it has one of the most powerful endings I've ever heard. And it's short/light enough that it wouldn't take the spotlight away from the Chopin and Grieg.
Nice selections, by the way.

Favorite pianists include Pollini, Casadesus, Mendl (from the Vienna Piano Trio), Hungerford, Gilels, Argerich, Iturbi, Horowitz, Kempff, and I suppose Barenboim (gotta love the CSO). Too many others.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, you guys!
With the Liszt, im not sure, but i THINK i might not be able to handle Wilde Jagd yet technically... i might if i practiced really hard, but...
Hungarian Rhapsody sounds nice, maybe 6 or 7...
But i think the Debussy sounds super!! I need a little more "20th cent" to my program, seeing its all big heavy romantic stuff. Maybe a prelude?
Hodi... i of course dont know what level your at and all, but i can say the grieg sonata is not as difficult as it sounds when played... have you ever looked at the score? its a big-hand piece tho, of course. maybe you could try it...?

If it's more of a contrast you're looking for, I'd take some baroque over 20th century stuff. Doesn't have to be Bach. How 'bout some Handel?
If you really want to go out with a bang, I might save the Chopin op. 10 no. 5 for last. All the etudes don't have to be together, you know.

I think the Mozart variations would be a good ending, actually. It's short, easy to follow; but you would need to play it rather quick (don't lose precision).
