Like Rob, I'm also in a class for talented young people, so 4.

My school friends don't play piano.

Your poll falls short.  I have a small group of musician friends, some are pianists, most are from our symphonic band and they play other instruments, but "understand".  Most of my other friends are either from work, or friends from other hobbies or family.  These folks are clueless.  Example from last Friday night:  "so what songs are you working on?"  - a: "Oh,  a Mozart sonata, a Chopin ballade, and a Prokofiev piece".  Q: "How long does it take you to learn a song?"  - A:  "Well, I've been working on these since about Christmas time, so I can perform them at a festival in June."  Q:  "you mean you work on ONE SONG for 5 months????!!!"

(sigh)  ::)

yeah i have uni music buddies who play the piano seriously, but out of that all my old school friends and art friends either played it at a young age and dropped it or have no link to playing an instrument at all- which is annoying cos they never have any idea what i'm on about- frustration!! except one uni art friend plays the organ so we've had a few little bonding conversations about our instruments.
actually funny thing today, talking about music in art today, and this other girl's like oh i used to play the piano, and the flute, for about 9 years, and everyone's like oooooh wow that's a long time. and then she's like yeah i didn't like the flute as much because you can't play whole 'songs' on it like the piano. and i'm just thinking well that qualifies how serious you were about it. like no offence to those who do, but i still think that if you play an instrument (not voice) seriously, then you'd know that you don't play songs.

I have 2 friends, my best friend got to grade 5 and plays for fun, her partner can't read a note of music but improvises everything and composes abit as well. My husband can just about tell the difference between Mozart and Chopin now but we've still got along way to go  ;D
