Best piano quintets
on: May 26, 2005, 03:06:17 PM
Hey everybody.

I'm planning a recital with a friend of mine who is the leader of a string quartet (2 violins, viola and cello), but we need to pick two piano quintets to practice. What do you recommand ? What are you favorite quintets ?

I personnaly like Franck's, Schumann's and Dvorak's, but they might be overplayed. I recently heard Arthur Foote's quintet and thought it was lots of fun... Any recommandations ?

I'm not sure that there are a whole lot to choose from.  Other than the ones mentioned already, I can't think (off the top of my head) of another famous composer who wrote Piano Quintets.

If you get the opportunity to play piano quintets, how can you not do the Brahms?  It is simply one of the greatest pieces ever written and a good performance is absolutely electrifying.  You could do the Schumann or Brahms, but I am a fan of the Dohnanyi and Shostakovich.  I think there is a new quintet by Jennifer Higdon, who is a fine composer.  You could also do some Faure.

There is also a Bartok Quintet and if you're really looking for off the beaten path, one by Furtwangler.

If you're searching for a lesser known quintet, you may want to consider Medtner's. It's very melodious and the piano part is great.

No one mentioned Schubert yet.
