Rachmaninoff's 2nd Sonata?

What's the big deal about this piece? I'll admit I've only heard one recording, Horowitz's, and I'm usually a big Rachmaninoff fan, but this piece doesn't sound very good to these ears.

and listen to (or watch) Olga Kern's live recording of it.
