Fair Price for a used Steinway B
on: May 27, 2005, 02:01:32 PM
We have been looking for a grand piano for a few weeks.  We have found an outstanding 14 year old Steinway Mahogany B for $ 40,000 plus 6% tax.  (We would prefer black which cost less new) We would like to not spend more than $35,000. Should we keep looking ? We have also considered an L (have not found a good used one yet) and a new Walter190 for $28,000 new. Walter 190 is the closest thing we have to a Steinway - but  played them at differnt locations.

If the B is as good as you say(always get a tech to check it) It s great deal. I would try to get a little more off the price but if it were me I'd go for it. The L does not compare to the B.  No comment on the other one.

Would you be interested in a brand new Charles Walter grand that has never been sold??   I know of a satin ebony for under 21K.  It is the last piano this dealer has.  They dropped the Walter line because Walter undercut the dealer by selling directly to the customers.

Yes, it is the Charles Walter 190, 6'4" grand in satin ebony. brand new.  Very nice.  The piano is located in the Illinois Quad Cities, about 170 miles west of Chicago.  This next month, June, the piano very well might sell since the dealer is putting it in a special promotion at the local college.  He is not protected by territory since they are no longer the dealer for CW so he would be most anxious to speak with you if you are interested.  He told me he would sell it to anyone.  If you would like to contact him let me know and I'll give you the number.  And yes, it is under 21K.

There are far too many variables involved to simply say "X" is a good price for a Steinway B or any other piano for that matter.

Always get a qualified Piano Technician (an R.P.T., or even better, a North Bennet Street School Graduate) to appraise any piano before you buy.

Good luck.

I have found an A - condition Steinway B Mahogany (Not a plus since I would prefer black) that has beautiful action & sounds fantasic. It rivals new ones in the same room. I need to know what would be a bottom price to offer. I need to know soon.

You do know that a mahogony piano is more money than a black one right? Call a dealer for a price on a new one. Not sure with the mahogony but I bet its over 70K.

Yes, I am aware that a new B is around $63,000 in black and $ 69,000 in mahogany. So $6,000 more for a new one in mahogany, however we would prefer black if possible. I'm just trying to find out what would be a bottom price for a used B, 15 years old (black & mahogany) in outstanding condtion. I do understand that black pianos are easier to sell than other colors, so that mahogany might not be worth more than a black when sold as used ?

I think the price is fair so if you can get anything more off all the better.
