Liebermann: Rhapsody Paganini
on: May 27, 2005, 09:00:47 PM
My local music store has a great sale, and my piano teacher was there and saw a copy of Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra by Liebermann.  She (my piano teacher) told me Libermann has a reputation for insanely difficult piano concertos, but has no clue about this piece.  Is anybody here familliar with the work, and if so, would you recommend a recording (haven't found any) or if you have any other thoughts about it.

Here's some info about the piece.  To my knowledge no recording of this work exists...

Ashkenazy's recording is not only the best, but BY FAR the best.

I've listened to probably about 20 recordings of this piece, and usually I will like some concerto interpretations almost equally, but Ashkenazy's playing of this work is untouchable.

Richter, Rubenstein, Jablonsky, Pletnev, etc.  CANNOT touch it.

Are you referring to a NEW composition by Libermann, or the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini? I assume you are referring to the former, and therefore Richter, Rubinstein, Pletnev, or Ashkenazy wouldn't have recorded this peice. However, that being the case, I have never heard of this new composition. It seems a bit redundant to compose yet ANOTHER major peice an a theme by Paganini, as that has been done quite frequently in the past.

Is Libermann a well-known composer? I haven't heard of him or his works. Am I missing anything important?

I am referring to a NEW composition by liebermann.  I have never heard of the piece, and so I thought if anybody here had played it or seen it performed if they had any thoughts on it.  Liebermann to my knowledge has composed 2 concertos I think, and they're supposed to be extremely difficult (Par with rach 3, brahms 2, etc..). Apparently, I did some research and he was comissioned to write the Rhapsody in 2001.  Anyway, i'm just wondering if there is a recording any of you know of, or if there isnt one, if there are any thoughts out there.

I did a term paper on Liebermann last month.  He's an American composer and pianist we should all become familiar with, and has written some great works for piano.

A bit of trivia in light of the fact that the Van Cliburn is currently underway...

In 2001 Mr. Liebermann was awarded the first American Composers' Invitational Award by the 11th Van Cliburn Competition after the majority of finalists chose to perform his Three Impromptus, which were selected from works submitted by forty-two contemporary composers.
