deleting topics

We used to be able to delete our own topics. This doesn't seem to be possible anymore. Why has this been changed?

Because someone might write someone really useful and it's not right that the original thread starter could delete that.

If it's truly a useless thread, just ask Nils to delete it.

good point. I suppose we can always modify posts, say if we feel compelled to say something rude or confrontational and immediately think the better of it.

Some forums do not even allow modification of previous posts. I suppose any deletion or modification runs the risk of producing non sequiturs. Also, if we do not indicate to whom we address a remark, a deletion can make it seem as if we are referring to somebody else. I have seen some hilarious results of this on other forums. I think we all have to use common sense and, if we wish to materially alter the sense of something we have said, then it is better to write a new post to that effect.

But disallowing DELETE while allowing MODIFY is not an optimum solution, in my opinion.

With MODIFY, you can simply EMPTY your post. Ok, you are leaving traces, but the content has been deleted... ;D ;D

Also, modify can let you do some pretty funny things.  We do, however, need it and just have to hope that no one abuses it.
