Poll: Sostenuto Pedal
on: May 30, 2005, 04:40:34 AM
Just curious how important the "sostenuto" is to people.
Sorry, this does NOT include the so-called "bass sustain" (or "half-sostenuto") available on most uprights. We consider here only the true "sostenuto" that can selectively sustain individual notes when applied properly.

I experimented with the sostenuto with the pianos at the university before I got the grand I have now. Since I am interested in 20th centrury music, having witnessed the use of the pedal, it was a siginificant factor in my piano decision. I didn't want to eliminate the possiblity of playing some music because my piano didn't have the sostenuto.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Hmm my upright at home has a practice pedal instead of the sostenuto pedal in the middle. Guess at the moment the practice pedal is much more useful - I can practise early in the morning and late at night without disturbing my neighbours too much =)

Cool question,
I really don't use the sostenuto pedal (well once or twice I suppose) and it didn't enter into my decision making.
If a grand didn't have one though, I would think twice about buying it.
