Good recordings of Debussy
on: May 31, 2005, 03:21:40 AM
He doesn't seem to get talked about much here.  At least as far as which artist performs his works the best.
I have Arabesques 1 and 2 "perfected" and I cannot find recordings of these 2 floating around on the net.  Especially #2 which I prefer if I had to pick between the two.  Please name some names who have recorded these pieces to your liking  so as I may listen and gain some insight.   All I have to go on is a couple of midi files which of course do no justice to them emotion wise.
Number 2 has all kinds of possibilities but its hard to change the way one plays the piece after they've played it so many times.   Suggested BPM on this?
Mine is not marked and I am playing it at approx. 112bpm.  The only notation I have for the piece is Allegretto Scherzando.

I don't know about any recordings that are available on the net, but I think Gordon Fergus-Thompson plays the Arabesques pretty well, especially the first. The dynamic control is incredible; he never goes above MF, but he is able to distiguish between pp and ppp and all the other graduations of dynamics in between.
