Explain your nickname :P
on: May 31, 2005, 04:26:28 PM
I know this subject might be odd, but explain your nickname  ;D

A friend of mine made up a nickname for me.. Kabouter is the word in Dutch for gnome.. Because I'm not very tall (1.55m  :P) they always call me kabouter at school (yea, I luv my friends  ;)) and Bouter is short for Kabouter.. The word Boogie sounds funny in combination with Bouter so that's why my nickname is Bouter Boogie  ;D

Interesting, eh?

My name was supposed to be something sleek, cool and abstract (like Gerwshin's title "Rhapsody in Blue"). So I thought Black Key would be cool, sorta like a minor key or something.

But then I listened to Chopin's Opus. 10 No. 5 and the connotation has stuck.

...well! Apparently NOT! Thalbergmad, I have waited and waited ever since you posted this and so far your screen name has hardly uttered a peep, much less one iota about itself. This certainly requires disciplinary action if you aren't going to allow your nick to be so disobedient.

In other news, I think my screen name has been explained in numerous "Goldberg Variations" threads and if you haven't read it there, well, I just kind of gave it away, so...

I was going to start a Thalberg thread, but i was worried in case i ended up having conversations with myself.

I adore his music and have done for many years, but it is not exactly popular.

Anyone else ever played any Thalberg??

I have heard, and "sight-read around with" a few Thalberg pieces and I actually find him a little difficult to get into. At first I anticipated a natural inclination towards his music because I thought, at the time, that I am "made" for Romantic piano "salon" music like Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Tausig, Rosenthal, Hummel (well, ok, he's a little pre-Romantic), Czerny (same), and even Liszt, but really I found it mostly doesn't do a whole lot for me. Maybe I'm just not listening to the right pianists. Would you recommend anyone in particular for Thalberg, thalbergmad? I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something about the music that leaves me a little unsatisfied. I'd rather stick with Liszt!

On the other hand, I've only heard and seen his operatic fantasies. How about his original compositions? I believe there is a piece by Thalberg called "Un soupir, Melodie variee pour piano" which I happen to like a lot, but otherwise I haven't heard much!

A Nice selection of his music has been released on the Naxos label. The Italian Pianist Nicolosi has recorded many of his Fantasias. There was also a stunning recording by Earl Wild on a CD called The Art of the Transcription.

My personal favourites are the Bellini-Sonnambula and Rossini-Semiramide which i am learning at the moment. As far as original compositions are concerned, the Piano Concerto is a youthful gem and the Nocturne Op28 is a tear jerker.

I guess i was originally attracted to him because of his famous duel with Liszt and his ability to make 2 hands sound like 3. I did not instantly fall in love with his music, it just crept up on me.

If you would like to view any scores, please feel free to PM me and i will gladly send anything i have.

Hmm. This is strange. Your name means 'hopes' (as in plural) or 'you hope/wish' in Finnish.

wow first post here for quite a while now..

right, now, well, my friend and I once were just being goofy and talking about random things and combining things we both like.. and I thought of one relating our music tastes - it combines her love of Chopin and mine for Mozart => hence, Chozart.
Music, even in situations of the greatest horror, should never be painful to the ear but should flatter and charm it, and thereby always remain music."
