Your age?
on: June 02, 2005, 04:49:43 AM
Although this question might be kinda odd and rude (YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER IT IF YOU DON'T WANT  ;D) I'm still curious about the ages at PF..

I'm 17, in about 5 months I'll be turning 18  ;)

sure, rub it in.  at least i  know i'm not alone.  when i saw the name dinosaur tales, it made me feel younger than one and older than most.  of course there's ted and bob (whispers to herself about losing bone mass, forgetting names, slowing down traffic)
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Hmm shouldn't the age be 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 etc?
The current choices is kinda ambiguous as people with ages 20, 30, 40, 50 can have a choice where they wanna to put their votes  (and I assume it'll be the younger age group?)

I do find the results of this poll very concerning. It stands to reason that the internet community must be populated by many experienced older pianists and musicians who refrain from contributing to forums such as this. Why do older musicians not participate in communities such as pianoforum I wonder ? They surely must have browsed and know of their existence. There is really no need for a "generation gap" to exist at all in music , you know; music transcends it.

I do find it anomalous that older professionals, in particular, do not offer guidance via the internet. Some young players on this forum are supremely talented and could surely benefit from direct interaction with an internet community of older players. Why is it that an amateurish, idiosyncratic (but musically happy) old fart like me, with no professional experience, is the only one on this forum over fifty ?  Where are all the accomplished mature people ? Why are they not here, giving people the benefit of their experience ? They probably think it's beneath them.

Let's hope a few of them read this and that it pricks their conscience sufficiently to make them join.

I was thinking of starting a poll like this myself. My suspicion has been confirmed! I'm turning 22 in August.

And isn't it possible that older people simply did not wish to answer this poll? We should have nils write a script to tally all the reported ages in the membership database. However I suspect the results would be similar.

Ted: I actually believe that professional musicians in general don't have time for ANYTHING that involves giving of themselves freely. If they can't charge you for their time, they won't bother with it. Which, I'm sure you're quite familiar with.

Where are all the accomplished mature people ?

While I've given up on chasing the accomplishment side of the equation, at 40 I'm considered quite old in some circles and quite young in others.  Seems to be a rather nebulous age I'm finding.  Not really sure if I'll ever mature, the vote's still out on that one.

For those who are on a multiple of 10, it poses an interesting question to them: do you feel older or younger than your age??

it depends on what time of the day it is.  i feel younger in the morning (birthday this month - will be 44).

sometimes, like torp, i think 'have i really accomplished anything'...but if you have a family you are doing two things at once.  some months i have a lot of music in memory, and then once in a while family priorities take over and i have to put it off a bit.  one thing i do find, is when you learn something musically (and it stores in long term memory) you don't have to keep practicing that particular thing over and over anymore.  also, when you love something, you do it no matter how long it takes.  i have determined that if i need to crawl onto the stage at 90, i will.  i'll use my cane to prop up my body from the back, and if i fall forward that's ok (will look better musically).

Depends on who I hang out with.  Most of my friends are "slightly" younger than me so they like to raz me about being 40.  However, I was renewing my driver's license yesterday and an older gentleman referred to me as "young man."  I suppose from the perspective of an 80 year old I AM young.

Most days, I feel much younger than I thought I would feel when I reached 40.  When I was younger I always figured I would have a lot of things figured out by the time I was 40.  I suppose I have.  It's just that those things have been replaced by other things so the quest continues.

Derek:

Yes, I agree money probably has a lot to do with it. However, many older musicians have no need to make any more money. Admittedly I am very different in most things and the longer I view forums the more different I realise I am so take anything I say with a pinch of salt.

Fortunately we have the fine examples of people like Marsalis and Mary Lou Williams who fed a tremendous amount back into the younger musical community. There are those who do it, possibly not via forums of course. Another reason could be the very simple one that many older people do not care for computers.

33. Although a lot of people (of any age) have access to Internet, the way that different age groups use it is very different. I tend to think that older users (I'm stereotying here...sorry) use the Internet to e-mail or search for very specific information while younger users spend more time on chat, music downloads and forums like this one. That might be one explanation of not seeing more older, more experienced pianist in the forum.
