Anyone into guitar music?
on: June 03, 2005, 12:13:51 AM
By that I mean Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Shawn Lane, Yngwie Malmsteen etc., as well as stuff like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Tribal Tech Tones etc. My main instrument besides piano is electric guitar, and this is the kinda stuff I listen to most of the time. My main source of income is doing gigs with my pro-rock/metal band, and I just wanted to see if there's anyone else on the forum that's into that kinda stuff.

I like Malmsteen, and Dream Theater a lot. I don't like Symph X much. But love rhapsody.
Most of the guitar music I listen to however is melodic death metal such as Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, etc. I also play guitar but I'm not quite a virtuoso at it. I was in a melodic death metal band for a while. it was pretty fun

I've been listening to a bit of Hendrix and Paco De Lucia. They're good in their respective styles of guitar playing. But actually, I really love Velvet Underground's use of guitar sounds in their longer songs where it starts off pretty plain with an easy hook to get into and then it keeps on getting more and more intense and its' crazy.
Check out
Velvet Underground - Heroin
Velvet Underground - Oh Sweet Nothing.

Yes, I'm very into it, though my skills have waned in the last few years as I've dedicated more and more time to playing the keys.
I haven't heard of Shawn Lane. I'll have to check him out. I generally love most anything that is prog. I'm currently listening to IQ - Dark Matter and am just in love with it. Heard a couple of tracks from Jelly Jam (John Myung's project band along with Ty Tabor from King's X, and Rod Morgenstein (sp) from, I believe, the Dixie Dreggs) the other day and the guitar work was killer. Unfortunately I was at a party where turning it up and listening in detail was not an option.
I'm anxiously waiting the next Symphony X album, though it will be delayed a while.

Shawn Lane is probably the best electric guitarists out there, (well he is dead now).
He also wrote/recorded a piano concertino and a orchestra suite. Might interest us classical oriented people.
