just registered - hello ! !
on: June 03, 2005, 07:24:37 PM
Hey.  You guys seem to have a really cool forum going on here.  I am a 22 year old male and recently started playing.  I seem to be a major beginner compared to the majority here.  I basically can play pieces in the same difficulty range as bach minuet in g (notebook of magdalena) lol.  I'm not trying to be the next virtouso or anything, I just play for fun and as a hobby.  I take piano classes as a music major in college, so I may be forced shortly to take it more serious than I do now, but thats ok with me if it improves my playing.  I originally intended to try and write electronic dance music type stuff and realized it would be a good idea to learn how to play and have been addicted since.   :)

Welcome to the forum, Matt :). I'm a newbie myself. I'm 16 and have been studying piano for about  three years now. I've loved music all my life, and I plan to go to college and major in composition. I've already written a number of pieces for the piano, and I have some works for larger ensembles in progress. So, what do you plan to do when you get out of college?

That's cool, everyone has to start somewhere. There are tons of people on this forum who are obviously much more advanced than I am. I like to read their posts and learn from them.

Have you composed anything yet? Just wondering.

Yes, I've composed quite a few semi finished dance tracks and synth type stuff.  I basically work on  compositions whenever I can.  I often hit some sort of writer's block before I finish and have ended up with a hard drive full of 2-3 minute long unfinished works. lol. I haven't composed any pieces strictly for piano yet, but I am just learning.

The "Writer's Block" thing has happened to me before. To cure this, I listen to the unfinished piece with headphones in a quiet room. When the music stops, I let my creativity fly and put down the first thing that comes to my mind, no matter what it is. Most of the time, this is enough to spark more creative ideas in my mind.

yes, that's a very good idea!  Since I see everything visually on the computer sometimes I have to realize I am supposed to be using my ears and not so much looking at the monitor.  I'll do just like you said and visualize what I want in my mind, and then get it down on 'paper'.  Luckily, the latest one I've been working on I haven't hit a block yet and I may see myself actually completing it. lol.
