Angry at my hands!
on: June 14, 2003, 04:42:44 PM
A funny thing happened to me today actually.  This week I was concentrating on getting my scales and techniques up.  Every time before I start playing piano, I always do 30 minues of Scale warm ups, so every day this week I tried to sustain this and I did.

Then today I got up and started doign scales, and bam, nothing! My fingers felt weak and my wrists began to hurt right away!  Maybe it was because I finished playing the other night at around 1AM and went to bed pretty late, and I was tired, but I was so angry at my hands! :(

I mean I worked all week very hard,  I did my Etudes very good, I felt my technique strenghten, and then they just fail on me.

When your wrists hurt is it bad?  I don't know about you guys, but my teacher tought me everything.  The only place in my body where I feel tense or nervous is my brain, and thats it!

My hands are free, my shoulders are free, and I've never had any problems with overplaying my hands.  I've been playing for 4 1/2 years, so I guess I'm doing everything right, because I see progress, and more progress.

If your wrists hurt, then something is definitely wrong.

From what you've said, it seems probably that your problem is simply one of overwork. But don't rule out the possibility of wrong technique either - even a tiny technical error might cause health problems if one repeats it for 10 hours a day, every day.

Whatever you do, don't ignore the problem. If you do, things will only get worse.

my wrists bother me when I get too tense in the wrists. You might want to check that out. You may be pretty relaxed, but after endless hours that slight tension might still be enough  to cause the pain.

Ease off on the practice for a few days. After that make Relaxing of greater importance. Tension is extremely dangerous to your pianistic health.
If I miss a day of practice, I notice it
If I miss two days, my wife notices it
If I miss five days the public notices it

I understand the anger.  It feels so unfair, when you've been working hard and doing everything right, to feel that your body is betraying you and holding you back.  But Joe and others are right, you must not ignore this pain and just keep plowing ahead heedless of this important warning signal.  As they say, if it hurts, stop, stop it now, and take a break, or else you're setting yourself up for much worse to come.

Good luck!
