Performance Level Expectations
on: June 07, 2005, 02:37:12 AM
I'm a beginner with piano, (16yr old male), but I have a friend (15 year old girl) who has been playing since elementary school, and she can listen to a moderately difficult song and play the whole song by ear within about 5 minutes, (umm the only song I know the title of that she learned that fast is reviewing the situation from Oliver! the broadway musical)is this level normal after that amount of time? Because it would be nice to be able to do that haha. She recently learned Rhapsody in Blue..sorry for sounding musically retarded but I haven't heard her play it, is a good song? hard? Anyway..for now, and for many years to come I'll be playing the easy stuff to start (right now its the first movement of fur elise for my first two handed piece haha)

Being able to transcribe a song by ear is a skill that's not necessarily related to skill at the piano.  Being able to play well obviously helps but there is a lot of ear training needed too.  As for Rhapsody in Blue, yeah it's hard, but i'm sure you'll be playing it in no time.  Anyway congratulations for deciding to enter the wonderful world of piano, keep it up and you won't regret it!
I'll be Bach
