Moonlight Sonata 3rd mvt, intro arps fingering.
on: June 08, 2005, 06:54:43 PM
I'm finding initially that the fingering 1235 1235 etc. works well for the first couple of arps, but I'm wondering if I practiced some of the inversions with 1245  if the passage would become even easier to play? What fingering do you normally use?

It seems to me using 1245 for some of the inversions of the arpeggio would probably be a good idea....my wrist wouldn't have to twist as much...it therefore follows that it should be easier to play the passage then. What are your experiences with fingering this piece?

wondering the same question myself!  maybe an alternation between the two according to how comfortable the fingers feel with either fingering.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

definitely use 1245 if need be. i use it for the third measure when the arpeggio is in first inversion. come to think of it... and as i look through the piece... i use 1245 when the arpeggios are in first inversion each time, with the one exception being... everyother first inver. arpeggio using fingers 1235. er... make sense?

On BBC (UK) we have a 3 part programme about Beethoven showing at the moment, watched "Beethoven" play it the other day and it's inspired me to dig it out again, excellent piece  :)

Argh i hate that programme, bits of it are interesting but the fake interviews with family member or his "childhood sweethart" are infuriating.  I only watched half of the first one so far (had to go out at 930) but i remember one part where his "brother" was telling us how Beethoven got all dressed up to go to some recital.  He was describing exactly the clothes Beethoven was wearing (green tunic with gold buttons, in real detail).  I highly doubt this is a recorded historical fact, if it is his brother needed either to get into fashion or get some help, and if it isn't why on earth was it put in?  The one on Mozart that was on a while ago was equally annoying.  I agree it's good that the public get to hear some gorgeous music and may even be inspired by it to listen to more, but i don't think it had to be toned down quite that much.
I'll be Bach

sol do mi sol   do mi sol do   mi sol do mi

1 2 3 5    1 2 4 5    1 2 4 5

or

1 2 3 5   1 2 3 5   1 2 4 5

the 3rd has to be 1 2 4 5, there's no way you'll get equality at speed with a 2 and 3 playing a 4th
