Guys, we need an FTP, badly.
on: June 09, 2005, 06:36:46 PM
Wouldn't that be great if this board had an FTP?

And maybe to post files on the FTP, we would need a password, or we'd have to ask someone through e-mail.

I bet that alltogether, we have XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX times a billion piano videos, even instruction, tips, mp3s, anything that we could share.

Thoughts on this or how to go about doing this?

395 posts, yet you managed to post in the wrong section, I thought I had seen everything! (correct and ban me if i'm wrong) :P

Why don't we get a torrent section running in that case, amazing what you can get from using that client ^_^ Although I bet the bandwidth for a tracker and stuff is FREEGIN expensive! >_<

Although I never researched properly, but do you ONLY download from peers, and not the tracker at all? I thought the tracker was a seed aswell (hence more bandwidth concerns) :/

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "FTP", but from your post, it looks like some mass-scale file sharing. I am one of the ardent opponents to file sharing. It kills the music industry. Why do you think classical music is going down the drain? Because nobody buys CDs anymore, they just get it from others.

(Maybe I misinterpreted "FTP", if so, ignore what I said)

No, that's about what it is, SteinwayGuy, and for the most part I agree with you. On the other hand, I realise that FTPs can be justifiable inasmuchas they allow better access to recordings and videos that are NOT, and probably never will be, for commercial retail. For instance, imagine someone putting up some "pirated" recordings from a well-known, but publicly undocumented recital of...I dunno, Michelangeli. Well, Michelangeli is dead, so we're never going to hear him play live...ever. For many legendary pianists, some of us didn't even have a chance to hear them live because they lived (and died) long ago.

But, I AM against putting commercial recordings of anyone on FTP sites because it always hurts the record companies. I admit that I have downloaded a few recordings less-than-legally, but 97% of the time (ie, literally as much of the time as I liked the recordings) I guilt-trip myself into buying the CD. The original download was only for sampling purposes. But I don't think many people actually go that far. To them, it's just a cheap way of mooching off of others and reaping the benefits.

Now, that's not to say I'm against FTPs, mind. Just remember that I, for one, wouldn't enjoy seeing EMI and Hyperion discs popping up in one...

FTP stands for file transfer protocol (I think). It allows you to transfer files direct from someone elses server to your own pc.

I to am against file sharing but for recorded music only. There are some fantastic private sheet music FTP's around that allow people to download otherwise difficult to find sheets that they would have to pay obscene amounts to obtain anywhere else.

This i agree with.

What I don't undersatnd is why does it matter if these recording studios don't get ridiculous sums of money?  So what if they don't record anything anymore, all the great works have already been recorded, so it doesn't matter to me if they don't record the chopin etudes for the hundred and fifth time.

FTP = cool++

File sharing helps me buy cd's.

I would never buy cd's if it weren't for filesharing.

I went to pianosheets.org.   I don't understand how to do that at all;  I don't even know some of the words.  I think I will go practice for a while.   :)

There already is a BitTorrent site for piano related material: https://pianosheets.org/

not alot of mp3's there. I posted quite a bit at one time, but they didn't like that. They prefer sheets.

It would be great if we had a ftp. Instead of people pm-ing me, I could upload it to the FTPserver.

Y'know, copyright might be a little problem.

Seriously, I'm all for file sharing. Go p2p! But do you really want to kill pianoforum due to illegal copyright issues? This idea is silly.

For mp3s, there are newsgroups and IRC. Both have lots but it takes a while to learn how to use each.

iRC sucks for classical music. eMule is the best for that.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but why do you say this? Have you heard of #mp3_classical on Undernet? They have so much to offer; I've never left the channel without what I was looking for.

I still don't understand all this stuff.

But for classical albums eMule is the best. It's always complete, good quality. I will look into the irc thing though.

We could just use the ftp to keep recordings by Piano Forum (or Piano Street I guess..) members and videos they've put up. Everything non-commercial and non-copyright that has anything to do with piano to do... Make this own service for piano-related material that only PF members can upload.

Here's an example of a "slightly" different subject.. lol.. This is a extreme martial arts site, that has an ftp for their users to upload on. Nobody can delete the files, to prevent people deleting other's material. But all the material is videos by the users themselves: ftp://tricks:tricks@67.18.198.27/

We could have a ftp to keep the files from the audition room... :)

wow, my idea worked?

Whats all the stuff on that ftp?

Is it all pianoforum stuff?  any of it.  That's perfect.  That's what we need to use.

We need to make a sticky, tell Nils or something.
