Dejected
on: June 11, 2005, 12:29:05 AM
:-[  So... the other day I was talking to my friend, we happen to have the same teacher and she mentioned to me that our teacher was going to hold a concert for her students...but I was not asked to participate.  I'm really hurt not only because I feel like a terrible student but also because I've been asking my teacher to have a concert for students for quite awhile...  :-[ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I don't know if it was just me being a bad pianist or... ::sigh:: I don't know...
Maybe I should work harder?  Do you have any suggestions?

Don't feel bad. It's your teacher's fault. Even if she thinks you were not ready for a concert, she should have TOLD you about it and talk to you about why she thought so. Calmly talk to her about it and ask why you were not told. Remember, she was extremely rude for doing this.

Good grief.
How utterly classless.
You have my complete sympathy.  :-\ Don't let it get you down.

Your teacher deserves a good spanking..
Thats a terrible thing to do, she seems  to care more about her image than the growth of her students.

What a pregnant dog. What a freaking pregnant dog.

Either hit her, or talk to her about it. Or both. Seriously.

I must say, I don't know that that is necessarily true. I mean, I don't think my teacher asks me to play in all of the recitals she holds. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that I only attend a select amount of her recitals, probably for various reasons. At this point, do you have any pieces even remotely ready to play at a performance? This could have something to do with it. Also, what is your skill level? I know above that you asked us if you should practice more, but I still am not sure what level you are at. If you are a very advanced student, or at least one of her more advanced students, maybe she chose not to put you on this concert so that you wouldn't overshadow her other students. I guess it could also be vice versa.

Either that or maybe your teacher just hates you. Sorry.

That's just plain rude, my last piano teacher would hold recitals for her young students but often she didn't have enough students in other age brackets to have full recitals. Regardless a recital is something that needs to be done (and for me overcome).

I would talk to her about it and get the facts though, but it was rude not to inform you at all.

Maybe your teacher has not asked you yet.

also, maybe as one gets older (speaking to self also) they should rely less on their teacher for everything (acceptance, recital participation, etc.) and just hold their own recitals when they are ready either at their home for their own students, at church, or during the week at a retirement community, public place - such as restaurant, mall, etc. and have fun anyway!  you can find venues, too, if you say that you will help a cause with donations.  sell your tickets for any cause you choose and even if not all the people who bought tickets come, at least you have a venue. (idea plagarized from lostinidlewonder)
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

LOL... it's not like that though... I've been asking her to have a recital for the longest time.  She should at least tell me why I'm not playing...

Yes, G_Flat this may be true.  She probably doesn't think I'm ready to perform.  I think what hurts more is not that I'm not playing in the recital but just the fact that she didn't tell me about and why I am not playing.  In know that she has two recitals at least, one for her more advanced students than another one for all of her students.  Faulty_Damper also made that the point that she hasn't told me yet.  I don't think that I will be in this recital because she probably thinks I am not ready.  She is the teacher afterall.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I will mention it to her in my next lesson.
