Can I Put Our Piano On End?
on: June 11, 2005, 12:55:54 PM
Hi

My Mum recently bought a callard & callard piano, the only problem is we can't fit it through the door of the room we want to put it in without putting it on end. But because we are new to pianos we don't if it's ok to put this piano on end, if it is ok is there anything you need to do to it before we put it on end?

Thx Matt

Aside from deciding to make French doors a new feature to the room, how else would you go about putting a piano into a room?  :)  Of course pianos can be put on end, as there are no loose parts that would fall out.  Unless you are a bodybuilder/experienced mover, I would advise that you hire a piano mover to do this for you.
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.

just be VERY careful in doing so - have at least 3 or 4 strong guys to hold the thing. You don't want 900lbs of steal and wood crashing down to the floor, or worse, on somebody.

That's how piano movers get it through most front doors if there's a small porch and a sharp bend. Put a few blankets on the ground to protect the edges and if you have some sort of trolley it would also help.

Do it I have moved sh*t loads of pianos and there is nothing wrong with putting a piano on end as long it isn't against concrete as it scratches,
I am a joiner by trade, and the harp is an entire organ fitted to the boby, and the action is light weight, you would need a sledge hammer to dammage it, exagerating but you get the point. please trust me! (I am part of the piano preservation society)
(and a training pollatitian just kidding)

Blankets and a slider board on the bottom, let the board take the scratches when set up against the floor and it will compensate for any irregular shapes on the side of the piano you drop it on... I just watched the 4 guys deliver my piano 2 months ago and that was all they really needed.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
