John Williams or Andrew Lloyd Webber

Star Wars or Phantom? Indiana jones or cats? I personally like Williams better because of his awesome melodies (there would be no stars wars without him) however I do not think he could write a musical very well. What are yall's opinions?

Oh gah...two of my favorites!   ;D  The Phantom of the Opera is my most favorite musical; the movie version is excellent as well.  And John Williams composes great music as well.

Good one! ;D

Phantom of the Opera is quite a good musical, I thoroughly enjoyed the stage production in London. The film does not fare that well, though. Apart from its music, it requires that the singers be good actors and vice versa... It's theatre after all. So, a disaster on those terms does not necesserily reflect on the composer.

Only people who are not serious OR are musical snobs are of the opinion that Lloyd Weber cannot write well in the genre of musical theatre. The evidence is clearly stacked in his favour some years ago he was grossing over a hundred million - you cant do that if you cant write Good music ! - its easier to do so in the genre of sci fi film where the effects bring in thousands of people alone - having said this Williams is an extremely intelligent and skilled composer who knows how to write for film! BOTH are remarkable musicians and it is most exasperating when people lambast those composers of our time who are successful! - why do you think classical music audiences are dwindling!!!??? >:( :-[ :-\

Andrew Lloyd Webber - yuck. I think i only liked Jesus Christ Superstar (vaguely). Williams any day, all his music is lovely (although they both tend to write all samey stuff alot of the time).

Good point, I have this problem, and realize its huge negative effects on classical music.  Most people already regard it as a high brow snob thing, so when you tell them you know better or what not, it just reinforces that.  I need to change my attitude.

Anyway, I say John Williams because of Jurassic Park among others.  He didn't do Batman tho did he? that was tight also. I saw phanotom of the opera in toronto once with my mom and was pretty bored I recall.

Webber kicks William's ass any day with Phantom of the Opera.

I adore Phantom of the Opera.
