This is already an over-discussed topic; yet, I will still answer - 6 hours (from sunset to midnight) - and a "short" dinner is my only break (at 10 PM). I may exceed that 6-hour period but will definitely not recede. You practice only 2 hours? I devote almost 1 1/2 hour just for warm-up...
Chopin would scold his students if they practiced more than 3 hours a day. If you're doing it right, more shouldn't be necessary, and if you're doing it wrong, you're wasting a lot of time.
It's not that I dun wanna practice more than 2 hours.. It's because my mom has piano lessons in the same room I can't practice if she has students.. I'm also still in high school.. That doesn't makes it easier, does it
Following a conducting motto I once encountered (sorry don't remember the source). "Conduct as much as you need to and as little as you have to." I apply the same to practicing. I strive to do the most ammount of work with the least amount of effort in the least amount of time. Usually between 2 and 3 hours.
For those who answered that they practise 3-6 hours, what level of piano are you working on? Just curious
usually little spurts of 10 mins each accounting to 2hours a day.But if u wanna be a pro then ofcourse 6 hours or more is normal, nothing to be ashamed of its your job. and what a job it is!!!!
The repertoire I was working on during my high school years (practicing 3 hours a day) went something like this: 1. Beethoven Sonatas2. Some concerto for competition3. Bartok Sonata/Improvisations/Suite Op. 14 other stuff for competition4. Chopin Etudes/Ballades5. Debussy Preludes/Estampes and others6. Rachmaninoff Preludes7. Mendelsohn Variation Serieuse8. Brahms- Op. 117, 118, etc.9. Liszt-Un SospiroI had to practice because of all the competitions. I'm glad I get to choose to play whatever I want now and it's all for my own enjoyment!
i filed for 6! i often do alot more though either because i just really enjoy myself and totally loose tract of the time OR i have a performance deadline and i am running into the buffers so to speak! I just finished college but i used to average 5 1/2 or 6 hrs at the moment im fluctuating alot because i have no set goal some days i ve only done a couple some days ive done 8+ ( i find it depends on the weather - i practice better when its raining or cold!!). I definately come into the 3-6 hr bracket at the moment as an average i am currently working on: (hold your breath!) Bach 3 preludes and fugues, Brahms op117, Mozart cmin fantasy, Beethoven op11 trio Mozart k284 Dmaj (complete) Beethoven op110, Liszt Trans no8, Chopin op10/12 op25/2 +12, Franck Prelude Chorale and fugue, Schubert wanderer fantasy, Bach chromatic fantasy and fugue, Mendelssohn variations serieuses & Chopin Ballade 4 - to be fair some are old and some are new. Im toying with the idea of bringing Beethoven concerto 1 and Mendelssohn Trio back up too - but all in good time - like i said there is far too much good music!
I practice about 2 hours a day..
Wow, how on earth do you all practice for so long? I practise for about 1.5 hours, not everyday, but whenever I can squeeze time because school takes up so much time. I'm in school till 6 most of the days, and there's homework to do, work to revise, so by the time its all done i barely get enough time for piano. Just a question. How do you practice? Once you're fluent, memorised etc, do you play it again and again from the beginning to the end? Or else how do you practice shaping the music?
Everyone that says that practice more than 6 hours - how do you have time to talk here then?I practice 3-4 hours a day. But what's important is to practice with your head, think of every note, and every detail. Not just sitting and playing scales. (I dont mean to offend anyone here )
Actually up till last year I could never stand practising more than 3 hours a day. I remember reading an interview where Ashkenazy (when he's already up there & famous) said he practised 4-7 hours a day. I was horrified!!! But somewhow after I got used to it, 4-7 hours doesn't feel thaaat long anymore...
well, if u play3rd Rachmaninoffall the transcendental etudesChopin 1st ConcertoLiszt 1st Concertoand about 10 Chopin Works....u need to practise about 8 h
