Can $20K buy a used or rebuilt Steinway L?
on: June 18, 2005, 04:47:48 AM
I heard good things about Steinway L.  But I don't know if it's reachable at $20K.  Thanks for the help.

Used and in fair to poor condition, refurbished but not rebuild.  Best of lucks, it is very exciting to be in the market and with such a budget.  Do some additional research, though; $20,000 can buy much nicer a piano than most Steinways L you will find for that price.

Well, you can buy a Maestoso for much less that $20,000 (in fact, I think you are close to being able to buy two, I think.  Fabulous instrument for the price, btw, I highly recommend it - even though it seems you can afford even more piano).  What I had in mind was a rebuild Chickering or a used Mason A, which should be around that price.

CJ, are you around.  How much of an August Foerster does 20k buy you?  Another one I would look at in that price range is Petroff.  I think 20 k buys you a nice new big one.

If you have a chance, also try the new Knabe (made in Indonesia by Samick, I believe) and Rittmuller (the high-end product of Pearl River) and check out Imre Szabo's inventory at www.luxurypianos.com

This should be fun.  Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info.
I saw a rebuilt Steinway L in a store for $32K.  I guess $20K is way below then.
I also got a chance to try Schimmel, Petrof, and Estonia.  But Schimmel is again way above $20K.  I like Petrof and Estonia too.  Is it possible to get an Estonia 190 at $20K?

Petrofs IIIs can be purchased for under $20k.  I don't think you could get an Estonia 190 for less than about $25k.

Personally I think a good Petrof III is the best piano you can get for under $20k.  I ended up going slightly above this and got a Charles Walter 190 which I think is the best piano you can get for under $30k.

BTW, I don't buy into nostalgia (rebuilds).
