Sergey Prokofiev
Three Pieces from Cinderella
Op. 95
About Sergey Prokofiev's Three Pieces from Cinderella
Prokofiev’s ballet Cinderella was composed in 1940-1944 and provided a rich source of material from which he drew numerous arrangements: for solo piano (Three Pieces Op. 95, Ten Pieces Op. 97, and Six Pieces Op. 102), orchestra, and solo instruments with piano.
The Three Pieces from Cinderella Op. 95 were the first derivations from the ballet’s material to be published – before, in fact, he had completed the full ballet. They have in common character traits of gentle elegance, charm, and melodic loveliness, while at the same time being distinct pieces – the Intermezzo is graceful and somewhat quirky, the Gavotte crystalline and occasionally biting, the Valse lente warm and passionate.
