I was surfing through my cable TV channels when I stumbled upon the Tschaik No. 1. This time played by Lang Lang with the Berliner Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in 2004, I think. Half the time, the guy didn't even look at the keyboard. You know the playing is special when the cameras showed the string players in front straining their necks to catch a glimpse of the fancy finger work. Martha Agerich was always my favourite for this one, but now she has serious competition. The final bars of the last movement saw LL just looking at the orchestra, answering and giving back what they had to give. Breathtaking. I just wished I had recorded it.
