Searching for a Beethoven sonata
on: June 25, 2005, 03:29:24 PM
Recently I heard a Beethoven piano sonata on our area's classical radio station.  I went to the station's site and looked up the piece.  With the info was a link to an album by John O'Conor.  I went ahead on ordered it - it includes the Pastoral and 2 others.   I've listened to the album 3 times all the way thru and none of the sonatas sounds like what I heard on the radio.   :P  Either I erred and got the wrong album, or the station linked to the wrong one.  The Pastoral sounds a fair amount harder than what I remember, with some tricky passages and mood changes that I just do not remember from the radio piece.

Anyway, maybe you can identify it for me (or something close to it).  The sonata I heard sounded to be of mid-to-late intermediate level.  It is charming and upbeat.  The mood and style (difficulty level) is consistent throughout.  The pianist is John O'Conor unless the announcer/station got that wrong too.

I am wondering if it is in the sheet music I ordered (not received yet), the first volume of Beethoven's complete sonatas, ed. Schenker, pub. Dover:

Op.2, No.1
Op.2, No.2
Op.2, No.3
Op.7
Op.10, No.1
Op.10, No.2
Op.10, No.3
Op.13
Op.14, No.1
Op.14, No.2
Op.22
Op.26
Op.27, No.2
Op.28

Or should I have gotten Vol. 2?  :-b

Ummmmm....whooo boy. Charming and upbeat, huh?

Actually, your best bet is probably to just play through all of those sonatas and see if anything strikes you. Off the top of my head, you should start out with op. 14 no. 1 and no. 2, Op. 2 no. 2 and no. 3, op. 10 no. 2, and Op. 22, although there's not really a garuantee that it's an early sonata..

Was it a major or a minor piece?

It was in a major key.  And I'm 95% sure the announcer said the piece was by Beethoven (otherwise I would guess Mozart).

That's part of the problem, I tuned in somewhere in the middle of one of the movements.  Heard that one and two more.  So the sonata has at least 3 movements.

Here is a website that has all 32 Beethoven sonatas performed live by Artur Pizarro.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/pizarro/index.shtml

This may help you identify the one you are looking for.

yamagal: As others have suggested, play through the music once you have received it, maybe you'll recognize it yourself.

Also, most radio stations these days have their own website, and some also post online their "playlist," i.e. pieces they played on the air on any given date. If this station has a website and you remember the date and time you heard it, then it shouldn't be that difficult to track it down. If no website, ask the station by calling. Play-list is pretty standard and is kept on file at the station for a given period of time.

Awesome!  Thanks so much for posting this link.  Will give it a good listen, as the sheet music hasn't arrived yet.

That's what I did (see OP).  Either their album link was incorrect, or my memory is faulty.  Also, when I first heard it, I  jotted down the date/time somewhere.  If I can find that note, I'll look up the info at their site again - to verify what I wrote or see if they have updated the link.

Thanks everyone for your help!    :)

yamagal: Sorry--you did mention going to the site in your original post! If you don't have time to listen through Pizarro, then calling the station directly might help. In any case, good luck with your search! (I know how frustrating it can be--been there, done that!  ;))

I don't mind listening thru, as it has been a very enjoyable experience so far.   :)

Thanks -- I'll find it sooner or later!
