Sexy Pianists?...

Doesn't it seem like most professional pianists are "not good looking?"  Ok, I'm sure there are the exceptions like Valentina Lisitsa, but don't the majority just look like they're really nerdy or losers?  Even among my friends (or people I know that play the piano) the really "talented" ones look really nerdy and... well, they don't look that great.  I do understand that pianists really don't care what they look like (they're image) and they don't really spend much time trying to make themselves look good, but it doesn't seem like many of them have natural beauty either.  This is kind of like the stereotype that most people who are really intelligent look nerdy and wear glasses.  Why aren't the talented people blessed with looks...  Even though it's a harsh generalization, do you think it's true?

well...take the example of liszt.  he wasn't really all that good looking (take a look at his middle aged and older pics), but he had attitude.  he just thought he was sexy, therefore, he was.  he must have put energy into his playing.  people didn't come then and don't come now only to see a person.  they want to experience their personality.

many of the pianists on the pic thread are very attractive - and for the ones who are borderline - what's to stop them from getting a makeover.  you know, i watch that show and am amazed at how good you can make anyone look.  it's really all about the piano - and then when you get good enough for a contract - you go and get 'the works' done at some salon and get some new clothes.

and then, there's the spiritual side.  you know, Jesus Christ said about himself that he wasn't considered attractive.  maybe He's there to cheer up those that need some cheering up.  although, nowdays for the really ugly pianists, there's always plastic surgery.  hahaha no - i don't think so.  you know, some of the peopel on those plastice surgery shows look perfectly fine and if you didn't know (they thought they had  big nose or something) you wouldn't look at them and say 'oh, you have a big nose.'  you just look at people for the basics. lol  if they are missing parts - or were in a serious car accidetn even - it might HELP their career. people would feel like encouraging them.  now that i think about it - i think i'll break my leg.

I don't think talented people are not blessed with good looks. There are many sexy, georgeous people who are extremely talented. However, the nerdy geeky stereotype is so powerful and people automatically assume that if you're good-looking/sexy then you must be dumb. That is why we should not judge by stereotypes.

i will not fall prey to this statistic...as i am a virtuoso pianist who sight read through rach 3 in record timing..might i add i also have every beethoven sonata memorized and personalized modulations/transcriptipsions/ and variations stores in my brain...

yet i am very dead sexy..i literally fight the flocks of women that cling to me like static on the street..i need my own security team..just last week a bread crust of mine from pizza i ordered was salvaged and sold for 3,000,000,000,000 dollars on Ebay...its rea;;y hard being rediculously good looking and king of women...

I'm not one that really cares for looks either though.  Actually, when I can see that a person is talented, especially with piano, it makes them more attractive.  But when I posted this topic, I was just talking about the physical beauty of the talented people.

Ummm, maybe you should re-read the part where I say "I'm sure there are exceptions..."  And of course, there ARE exceptions, but the majority of the people (even on that thread) are old and not that great looking.  The ones that do look great are just posted in that thead multiple times.

Nice links, however 90% of the piano related concerts i've been to in the last 3 years have featured not such attractive pianists. So where are they all hiding?

Well, if we talk about professional pianists of today, especially female, I don't quite agree with that statement that they are not good looking, I would even say the contrary.

Actually, this constatation really stroke me and I got myself thinking deeply about how comes there is such a proportion of attractive concertists.

The first thing I thought is that they are pushed by record companies because of their attractiveness so that other pianists maybe more talented but less attractive are ignored.

But then I listened to those ladies like Hélène Grimaud, Naida Cole, Anna Gourari or my great favourite, Valentina Lisitsa and I came to the conclusion that they are absolutely outstanding performers with great musical sense and breathtaking technique, so my first conspiracy theory about attractive musicians pushed more than others seems totally irrelevant.

So I came to another theory : in our times, it's absolutely obvious that the physical image has taken an importance such bigger than what used to be even a few decades ago. And knowing oneself to be "sexy", "attractive" is really a great boost for confidence. That's why a lot of beautiful women are so successful, not only in arts but in a lot of domains (for example look at athletes like Maria Sharapova).

We all know how confidence makes the difference as far as professional-level piano playing is concerned.

Now for non-professional, maybe the thread-starter's statement is right.
