Barenboim On Beethoven - BBC FOUR REVIEW
on: July 12, 2005, 04:44:43 AM
"Barenboim On Beethoven - BBC FOUR

In January 2005, the great pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim gave a series of masterclasses in front of cameras on Beethoven Piano Sonatas in Symphony Hall, Chicago, USA.

Barenboimon is really becoming a favorite of mine. The quality of this video is amazing.

I don't know how many times I have seen people in this forum ask the question...Why do I need a teacher.
I already know how to play. This video will answer your question. This is what you want teaching to become. Not an exercise in technique. Technique you should have a command of after 6 or 7 years of real playing if you have taking the time to study music just a little. Not an exercise in technique, but in music. Where the teacher explains why and when you need to change the tempo or not change the tempo. Why the fortissimo is so important at bar 6 and how it relates to bar 16. I had Goosebumps listening to this video.

Barenboimon is very expressive and knowledgeable. His insights are precise and to the point without any negative feelings attached to them.

You also get to see top pianists get their butts kicked by Barenboimon. Not really, but considering the talent level you will be amazed at how much more he can help the performance. Lang Lang at a young age , before the bullshit. David Kadouch, Johnathan Biss

You also get a better understanding of the Beethoven Sonata's, how intricate the pieces can get and their importance to the piano.

This video I believe is from a BBC special, but it is available on the net at pianosheets.org. The version I have however is 750 megs long and took quite a while for me to download. I have no idea if it is available on DVD or tape, but I really recommend it to anyone who plays the piano no matter what level you are at.

This is one of the best videos I have seen on piano playing. I agree 100% with rlefebvr: this movie is entertaining, it shows you what there is (or can be) in one's playing, even though the three pianists get roughly half an hour each (Lang Lang gets more). Barenboim makes some (or let's say only) interesting remarks, and it is fun to see how these experienced pianist react to his criticism, lol, they look like some 8-year old who hasn't practiced (but they all play well, and Barenboim is very positive, but I had the slight feeling expecially Mr Kadouch wasn't very comfortable with the remarks on his playing. Oh, and all of them make some ridiculous facial and body position dislocations...Lang Lang beats them all, though, as usual. But he has positively surprised me on the Appassionata, I thought I would hate his Beethoven, but it was good, actually).

And, the most important thing, hearing someone so experienced talk about music with so much passion and knowledge literally urges you to go to the piano, practice and try to look for these little details even a bit more attentively.

Inspirational! Thanks for pointing it out.

You can get to pianosheets if you go straight to https://www.pianosheets.org/browse.php instead of the main page I think.

"in no time now"??   I don't understand this "Torrent" thing but it looks like it would take ages to download such a large file for being a newbie.

It all depends how many peers are online. Best is to do it overnight. This file usually has 6 or more peers so it can go pretty quick.

The beauty of Torrent is you don'y have to finish the same night. You can even stop the download and start it again later on. You do not loose your progress, but go on from where you left off.

I must be doing something wrong... :-\

I login to the site, find the file, and when trying to download it to my PC, it simply downloads a 27k (!!) unusable archive in 1 second  :o :o

Any program needed to manage this Torrents?

The pianoorg web site is not working.

No one can download anything at the moment. They are trying to rectify the situation.

Hello Everybody!

I am so happy to be a new member on this exciting forum. I spent most of last night reading through the excellent posts.

I'm a piano enthusiast and and an avid collector of scores - currently have over 10,000 scores.

I was wondering if anyone managed to get a copy of these Barenboim masterclasses. I tried the link but it doesn't work. Perhaps someone can upload a copy to savefile.com?

Best wishes to all the wonderful aspiring pianists on this forum!

George

Excellent post indeed!  :) this video gives many great insights into Beethoven and how to go about playing his music. Barenboim even had a wealth of good advise to give. Too bad he himself recorded them pretty badly, but he was young then. Perhaps if he were to record them again they would be good.
